Telling you the animation lock is insane on the tonfa, at least with axe it is for huge damage/ki damage. Until you flesh out anything though you need to put the time in. Most things are kinda meh until you unlock some skills and have the stats. I would say try the spear, get the pole vault...

Sub 100 agil you get a movement penalty, also if running in snow etc, roads give movement speed buff or at least keep it at base.
