    I thought along these lines a while after I posted. Hell, didn't Palpatine have like umpteen clones of himself in the E.U.? Not much of a stretch at all given that context.

    I don't believe Palpatine was in the game for galactic preservation. He wanted power. Keeping lots of people safe doesn't quite fit his M.O., even if he's one of them.
