I've found that you basically have to start the game in single player, back out, and then switch to multiplayer if your friends are joining you. Starting out straight in multiplayer causes the crash.

I had the same issue and looked around the map. Go to -345, -203. It's a very flat spot. The "Deep Bamboo Thicket" fast travel is just a touch east of the area, and it is just north of the Beakon alpha fight.
