You can just keep gathering snowballs from the same pile after a few seconds delay. The easy strat seems to be to shoot off 2 thrusters to drop it to the ground then you can just freely pelt away at it.

If the blue bar is accurate, that pic seems to imply you only need ~3 million total to get the 5 skill points points instead of 5 million. Wonder if they might be backtracking on the total amount needed given the general backlash.

There's a mod that gives all the real multipliers in game here. Wish I had this on my playthrough, would almost call it an essential mod. Even includes break damage numbers (in yellow text) and some weapons and pictos that have hidden damage bonuses on them.
