Perhaps I can make use of the dyno example. See the car is propelled forward by "pushing" off the ground. When you put a car on a dyno, the rollers in the back are what the wheels are "pushing" off of, but since they spin with the tires, the car go nowhere. Obvious yes. Now, the cyclinders on...

yeah i can see how it would beat a flat conveyer belt system. i"d like to see some diagrams though, i want to know how the mass of the plane applied to the wheel works while running on a flat conveyer belt system because i"m still not totally clear on that.
