So the wife wants to start showing LOTR and Hobbit to our kids - they just watched Narnia The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and they actually sat through most of it and liked it- need to get them the ol BBc version :)

Anwho- when thinking about The Hobbit, it just has so much stupid I cant stand watching it- then I remebered there was some talk about a realy good fan edit version... I did a search and there are a bunch.. so seeking info on what one is the best etc.

Thank yo.

If they edited all of the terrible out of the Hobbit trilogy, it would probably only be twenty minutes long.

I like the idea of a sensibly-done fan edit, but the reality of the video/audio quality suffering, the music turning into a cut up mess, the likelihood of all new issues being created, etc means I would almost assuredly never bother to seriously watch one.

I understand that there were some serious behind-the-scenes issues and severe time crunches that weren't necessarily the fault of Jackson and company, but I really wish that they'd have stuck to a two film structure. There's certainly far more than twenty minutes of good to great material in the trilogy, including within a decent chunk of the EE additions, but there's also a solid two hours of stuff that should have been left buried in Jackson's imagination.

All three Hobbit movies were fucking terrible. They were worse than the Star Wars prequels in level of awfulness. The hobbit trilogy, just like the Star Wars prequels, showed that you can't CGI and green screen the entire fucking movie. The original LOTR looked amazing because it was actually people in make up and costumes doing actual sword fights on actual sets. Just about everyone and everything in the Hobbit trilogy was computer generated, making it look dumb as fuck, and completely uninteresting.

No. Just no. They were a major disappointment but in no universe were they worse than the Star Wars prequels. Five Armies was almost good, the closest they had to a retarded slapstick scene was the chariot ride, and that was fine, especially compared to the escape from Goblintown, the barrel ride, or the Smaug chase. I realize it's the internet, but tone down the hyperbole just a bit.

I finally binged all three over two days earlier this summer. The only "good" film is The Desolation of Smaug. Too much fluff in the others. Very disappointing. Will get around to watching the fan cut this winter. I too recall the previously mentioned fan edit above is the best one.

Five Armies was the fucking worst one! The first one is at least watchable, the second one is bad, but at least saved somewhat by the scene in Smaug's lair (not the Benny Hill scene that ensued, but the lair itself). The third one missed the mark so badly it makes Gigli look like a cinematic masterpiece by comparison.

I only ever watched the first movie, decided not to even bother with the other two, and I'm a huge LotR fan (both book and movies). Some of the CGI in that film looked like it was done on a shoestring budget with no time, like the one with Radagast being chased on his sled. Holy shit that was bad! Also, this should never have been a trilogy. Probably too long for a single long movie (unless it's 4 hours lol), but a duo at most. Might just give this a watch.

Yeah, this was not Star Wars prequels bad--the editing, and the CGI scenes (Of which there are a lot) and story (Because of the filler) might have been "as bad". But the acting in this was about a million times better. People forget, star wars was a disjointed story, visually stunted AND the dialogue/acting was terrible.

Yeah, ~4 hours is quite long but they removed so much crap it's definitely worth it.
It's been a while since I watched it (maybe it's time for another LOTR + Hobbit-TE marathon)... There is almost no Radagast (a few seconds total), no pointless dorf+elf romance, no Legolas crapping on Newton (similar to Radagast, almost entirely removed), etc...

Same. Only watched the first one, not bad but wasn't great. Have to watch the other two before giving this edit a try. The Rankin Bass Hobbit is still my preferred take on film.

Putting it on the watch list.

Do yourself a favor, don't watch the other two Hobbit movies. Your life will be better off never seeing them.

I'm not averse to watching them at all. I've heard plenty from people who have so I know the gist of both Smaug and Five Armies. I look forward to them and this cut.
