We never used FR gear for Rag, maybe 1 or 2 pieces only. If DPS dropped enough to where you had trouble with killing the sons then things went to shit. During the main phases it was kind of a joke.

Were you pursing him before his first kill? It was pretty common thinking at the time that your melee DPS wanted like 300+ FR simply to free up the healers from having to worry about them outside of a HoT here or there. In fact the way I made most of my money early on was selling fires to craft FR gear.

We killed him maybe a month or two after the first kill? Maybe the thinking had switched by then already. I just remember thinking that the whole fight was downing him before the healers ran out of mana and making sure to down sons before he was ready to come back up. It was a long fucking time ago. Haha.

There are mechanics that people need to do. What mechanics were there in EQ prior to like OOW that actually required something other than dodge ae or tank adds/heal offtank?

I'm not going to argue EQ beyond OoW because I dropped that game for WoW like most people did. But EQ evolved into instanced, scripted raids with hoops to jump through before WoW even came out. WoW raiding was not revolutionary. Blizzard just did what they always do and copied something while also adding a ton of polish. Obviously they evolved in the decade since. It's likely EQ would've changed in that direction too, if there was no WoW and EQ still king (or maybe it even has evolved similar to WoW with regards to raiding, I wouldn't know).

I remember when WoW announced instanced dungeons and raids and the EQ crowd was basically calling the game training wheels. Now I don't think anyone in their right mind would play a non-instanced MMO.
I railed against that nonstop on the old forum. I did it so much a_skeleton_02 messaged me and got me into beta 3 to help change my mind. I was so wrong, instancing is amazing.

That's why I said OoW or maybe it started more in GoD. I forget both were AIDS. WoW did everything infinitely better

That was nice of Tig. Furor invited me into p3 beta because reasons. Max level was only 39. The max dungeon was Monastery. There were no talents. Or "crit" or spell enhancements on armor. Everything was the stats, and that's it. The good old days.

Yeah SM was really well done. Though I always thought UBRS was pretty good too outside of needing one dude with the key in your 40man raid rape on it.

DPS also had to pay attention to when they got the debuff to go to the dedicated "die here" zone. Eventually add-ons would just whisper you when you got it which made it much, much easier. I think my guild actually killed him the first night BWL opened. Or at least I know we killed him in the same run we first killed the 1st boss.

My guild got that lovely gate bug the first week of BWL.

Tigole sent me an invite for WoW beta after I posted the EverMatrix 2 satire on the old forum that people thought was pretty funny. I dunno which beta it was...forsaken could talk to alliance, druids had feign death still, mages could one shot people in PVP with invis+fireball, and warlock banish cost a soul shard (but worked on any mob type).

Everyone except the chosen live beta testers did. Although it did not take long for everyone to figure out that if a Vael attempt was a wipe the next Burning Adrenaline person should explode on the raid to reduce repair costs.

But the actual buff screwed casters royally with the design. 500 extra mana regen so zero extra dps and mages couldn't even use fire because "Hey look, fire immune raid boss!" Then Broodlord screwed them over with aggro issues, actually most drakes did too.

I thought the gate bug occurred after Vael? I know Fury on my server got past the bug and downed a bunch of shit until it was tuned up next week. My guild did not get past the bug.

I was part of the first wave of people to hit it, with Fury(alliancehax) being the token guild on Medivh to get past it. The "gate" was the gate right after Vael yeah. Between the servers being laggy as hell and the bug, it made for a frustrating night/week of raiding.

That was the best fight in Vanilla for a warrior. The mythical arms tanking build where you just spammed execute for hilarious DPS was quite fun.

Or Vael 1.0 (8-debuff slots, just remove that bad boy from the tank altogether). "Exploit early, exploit often".

Even after the fix, Vael was a fun boss. Had to have some tanks with a brain. The drakes on the other hand were a cluster fuck. Aggro was so fucked up.

SM was good except for the effed up loot tables. Healers don't want to do Armory (no cloth) except shamans and they of course roll need on mail they won't be able to use for like 5 levels. Tanks don't want to do Library (no mail).
And you usually have to make your own group because if you are not the right class (don't compete for loot with party leader) you won't even get a response. Same crap every time I start a char on a vanilla server.

Oh god, we're at the point of WoW nostalgia threads on these forums instead of EQ nostalgia threads. I'm old, you're old, we're all old. Fuck.

I had a rogue named suppression because as a priest in BWL those morons pissed me off with their inability to disarm those traps.

This game sounds cooler than what we got.

Oh yeah thats right I forgot that BWL went live while there was still a debuff limit. Yeah that sucked. Barman Shanker FTL.
