Biggest video game disappointment?

The biggest letdown was Diablo 3, no doubt about that. Runner ups are TOR, GW2: Heart of Thorns and Mechwarrior Online.

Diablo 3. Far and away. I loved D2. D3 announcement had my so hyped. Every bit of news was more and more disappointing. when it finally came out, I was already off the fence, and wasn't going to buy it. but, friends all bought in to the hype, and were talking it up nonstop, despite early problems. I caved inside a week or so. and instantly regretted it. Actually playing was even worse then my expectations. Graphics were shit, gameplay was a mess, game design just totally ass backwards for an ARPG, and the story/dialogue...

Sure there are games that fail to meet expectations, things like Starbound which is bleh. GW2 which could have/should have been better. Aimed high, and result is ok, not great. D3 however, is one of only 2 where, I want my money back you son of a bitches, and you should be ashamed of using that name for this piece of shit.

Blizzard does refunds, I believe, within a week of purchase even for things like "This sucks".

Vanilla D3 was pretty bad...they've kinda made up for it since then, so it does not sit in one's memory quite so poorly.

I usually buy games on the cheap, years after they are released/fixed, so it's hard for me to really be that disappointed with a game. I'd have to go with ME3's ending though. Had they even just done an OK job, I think the whole series would have been much more memorable.

gotta be EverQuest 2 although i guess some of the disappointment was dampened by what pieces of shit the expansions had become.

Chrono Cross by far. I've tried to go back to it a couple of times and give it an honest chance but I just hate the fucking thing. It was the tombstone that marked the death of my life as a console gamer. I had been reading about EQ in magazines and once I got to spend the night at a friends house playing it that was it for me.

I love Chrono Cross, although I agree that the game is polarizing. It still regardless has some of the best music ever to come out of Square.

Mafia 2. As a stand alone game it was good I guess, but as a sequel it was a major letdown since Mafia 1 is one of my all time favourite games.

MGS5 would be another.

The only game I ever wanted a refund on in my life was civ BE. I instantly regretted that purchase.

for reference, the other game I really regret wasting money on. (or more specifically my parents at the time..)
Kung-Fu Heroes on the NES.
I believe this game really cemented, rental first, from that point on. Just a mess of undecipherable gameplay and progress.

random punch blocks to get random powerups, many needed to kill immune npcs. Then a map system with no clear goals. you can't play because, you just have no idea what you the objective is.

MGS 5. I wanted a linear crazy MGS story like the others paced like a naughty dog game. I got a sit in a helicopter, or run across dirt picking up plants and boxes simulator with an unfinished poorly paced story instead.

I would agree with OP. I put in hundreds of hours into the original Starcraft and it's expansions. The game and balance was perfection. Starcraft 2 was "ok", and I know it had big shoes to fill, but it didn't catch on with me like the original. The storyline was fine with me, but what it missed was engaging multiplayer and the compelling player-made maps. I remember how addicted I was to DOTA when I first played it.

Diablo 3 could have made the list, but once they patched it it became a lot more playable. I remember on the initial release how god-awful drop rates were, and how broken the auction house was. It became less about playing the game and more about camping the auction house so you could actually find useful items to upgrade your character enough to actually finish the game. Terrible design. But after they patched it and removed the real-money auction house the game improved immensely.

Wildstar MMO was also a huge disappointment. I got it just to play with some friends who were really into it, but it was very blase and just not interesting. I don't think I got my character even to level 20 before I uninstalled it. At least it was an easy process to cancel the subscription (before it went FTP).

I'm conflicted on this one.

Without a doubt biggest disappointment was Mass Effect 3 ending.

On the other hand the QQfest over it was money. So its like a draw?

Diablo 3, and it isn't even close. HOWEVER, after they got their shit together, patched it a few times, and eventually ditched the AH it became a game that I poured like 400+ hours into and bought the expansion.

None of that changes the fact that I was so high on it and after it was released I played for 4 days, quit, then almost didn't go back.

Absolutely, Everquest 2 has been the biggest gaming disappointment for me.
There was so much potential and such a rich world to build upon; but SOE stupidly decided to scrap everything that made the original good in addition to having such a horrible sense of art direction it was almost unbearable to look at.

EQ2 (when first released). Just garbage from game play, graphics, everything.

You all loved XP debt, don't deny it!

Another vote for EQ2 from me.

EQ2 all in all, just because of the time and love invested in EQ and the hopes of what 2 could have been... full classic EQ2 had such potential the full voice acting... the combat skill related animations (when they worked? beta 2-3 I think and that's it)...but...oh.... I hated that everything EVERYTHING was a human with X head and + or - size
