Not related to the previous Dirk Gently series. BBC and Netflix together, so I'm not clear if it is going to release immediately on Netflix or what.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but you never know with this sort of thing.

I used to love these books growing up, the hobbit dude has been in a lot of interesting movies lately (Maniac for instance) so I won't be surprised if this is good.

It airs weekly on BBC America starting Oct. 22. The Netflix release is in December and it apparently will not be on USA Netflix, only other countries.

I enjoyed it as well, although it isn't really anywhere near as wacky as the books. Which is a good thing, I want to say.

Also very interesting that Elijah Wood is the main character, not Dirk, but I think that works to the show's benefit as well. It is very hard not to root for Elijah Wood in almost everything he is in, particularly if he's getting the short end of things. LoTR and Wilfred come immediately to mind, I'm sure there's more.

Second episode got a lot weirder; great for someone that enjoyed the books, but I have trouble imagining the average viewer (even the average British viewer) staying interested with all the wacky shit going on. I mean, I like it because I know it is supposed to be that way, but can it really stick around like this?

Some of the voices seemed really out of place for the characters. The black chick, I thought someone was dubbing over with a different voice, it sounded so wrong for her. The "holistic assassin" annoys the fuck out of me with her voice.

I like his sister though, for some reason I find her very attractive, even though she's got that psychotic-delusional thing going on.

Went to look up the sister, who is confirmed hot (as is the assassin when not on this show), and found out the show was created by Max Landis. I guess that explains a lot.

I'm liking the show, but I'm not too wild about how they're playing Dirk. He was not manic, he was cool a cucumber. I like that they mentioned stuff from the books, like Thor, to firmly place this as happening after all that. This keeps me from trying to connect everything to the books. It's been a while since I read them, but the assassin chick seems familiar and I keep thinking the bad guys remind me a lot of the electric monk. Now I won't be disappointed when they turn out to be something different.

I don't think I'm going to like the direction they're going with the army guys. They're acting like they made Dirk and the other somehow. But i'll give them a chance. Maybe they were just studying them.

i like the assassin chick. "I didn't doge the bullets, they dodged me" That sounds like it's from one of the books too. Assassin chick is closer to how Dirk should be played, only he shouldn't be so ... killy.

My wife said she's going to be disappointed if he's not having a passive aggressive argument with his cleaning lady over cleaning the fridge. Apparently that was her most favoritest thing in the books.

This is objectively worse than the one with Stephen Mangan.

As much as Elijah Wood is great, especially after Wilfred, It's way too over the top and I don't like the guy playing Dirk at all.

for once i am going to take your advice because you liked the Mangan Dirk as much as i did. those episodes were like fine art. i was crushed when they cancelled it. and i am livid they brought it back with other people behind it. thats some straight up bullshit.

As someone who likes the books - this TV series doesn't share much in common other than the basic idea of a holostic detective. To me the fact its almost entirely unrelated makes it easier to enjoy (as opposed to say Lord of the Rings which really butchers the books). The series was fun to watch, in some ways it reminds me of Hitchhikers Guide, Todd (Frodo) is akin to Arthur a character who is suddenly exposed to a bizarre world and has a bunch of crazy shit happen to him.

Knowing nothing about the books, I enjoyed the series a great deal. They had excellent actors in all the key parts and it took some really neat turns to avoid being too tropey. The Chief from BSG as the bad guy and the assassin chick's electrician partner, in particular were great. I also this show has about the best portrayal of a predestination paradox as I have ever seen in a Sci-Fi story (which is hard to do) since 12 Monkeys.
