Didn't see a thread for this, but if you are a fan of this excellent BBC version of a modern Sherlock Holmes, here is some great news.

From the article_sl said:
Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he and co-star Martin Freeman have signed on for four seasons of Sherlock. In a recent interview with RadioTimes the actor said that they'd agreed to do two additional seasons of the popular BBC show, but that he wasn't sure how that would play out.

"We've agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that. All I know at the moment is I'm doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three."

This is excellent news for fans following on the heels of yesterday's announcement that Season 3, after a bit of a scheduling delay, had begun production. Many have been concerned that Cumberbatch, Freeman and showrunner Steven Moffat's (who also has Doctor Who on his plate) increasingly demanding schedules would prevent Sherlock from moving forward. As it is the 90-minute episodes act as three small features per season, and are quite time consuming.

Cumberbatch indicated that he'd love to see the show go on well beyond the 4 seasons that he has agreed to. The plan right now is to film through the summer, at which point Freeman will break for The Hobbit reshoots, and then return to production for the remainder of Season 3. Here's hoping that they can continue to make this scheduling puzzle work!

Yes this is good news. Sherlock and Watson are played perfectly in this series. Elementary and House are good shows with Sherlock lite personas but their are some nuances in them that make it hard for me to enjoy them. I.E. House's drug addiction.

Fuck yeah. Glad that I know we'll have at least 12 more episodes of this. Big fan of the series.

If you haven't seen the second season yet.. don't read rest of post.. not spoilering it because it's been out for a bit.

I just wish they hadn't killed off Moriarty already. He was so amazing. I read the majority of the short stories awhile ago, so I know it's how those went down and he went on for a long time after.. but still, the actor and their interpretation of Moriarty were so great. In the last scene of Reichenbach Fall.. when Sherlock goes 'your insane' and he responds 'your just now getting that??....' hahaha.
I know they COULD keep him around in some weird fake death explanation, just like Sherlock, but it'd seem a bit ham fisted if they did. Plus, the show creators were on record in some interview saying Moriarty does not factor in heavily in the next season (possibly some allusions to him and his crime network though)

I really do love how they re-imagine the classic stories, while still loosely following the same plot. Hound of Baskerville, Reichenbach Fall, etc.. On the surface, it's the same basic plot.. for example, n the short stories, Sherlock really does investigate some kind of supposedly supernatural hound in Baskerville.

Also, Steven Moffat seems to be able to write the best lines for super intelligent characters. This and Dr. Who, guy has a niche..

I love everything about the show *except* Moriarty. I just really couldn't stand him, but I appreciate they try to do things a bit different. The Moriarty character on Sherlock just never worked for me and ended up annoying me for most of his time on the screen. The stories he was in were fantastic though like the rest of the show.

Wasn't the original sherlock holmes a cokehead? And the Cumberbath version has his nicotine habit. I thought the addiction was always a fairly central aspect of the character.

Yes and No. He definitely smokes a pipe but this during a time when it was consider normal. His cocaine habit he used less frequently and most often to stimulate his mind when he had nothing else to work on. The important thing to note about his habit is it wasn't a full blown addiction that he needed to feed. It would be more accurate to call him a recreational drug user.

Note also that Sherlock did like to experiment with addictive drugs but then Sherlock liked to experiment, period.

Agreed on this. I really liked the nemesis aspect of the character and said to see that gone but the mannerisms of the actor I never really liked.

I <3 Sherlock. Moriarty annoys me too, but since he's a villain I figure that's par for the course.

Moriarty on this show was terrible, i dont know if its the actor or moffat who directed him to act like a flaming faggot, but seriously how was that intimidating? you cant take anyone seriously when they are waving their arms around and speaking in a high pitched voice. even Judge Doom at the end of roger rabbit was scarier than moriarty.

Him acting slightly effeminate just helped show the contrast when he'd go psycho, and added to his craziness when his plans would work. I understand the hate to an extent, the first minute or two when he showed who he was in season 1, I kind of thought the same thing. But, it just made him more creepy in general, I thought. He was every bit as smart as Sherlock, but he understood human nature better and how to charm/manipulate other people for his goals, which is Sherlock's weakness. Having a worthy opponent/nemesis lurking in the shadows like that really adds a lot to the show and I'm sorry to see that part of the plot go, but they are staying true to the overall idea of books so I understand.

They toned that shit down last season, but it was too late. there is a great line from the simpsons in their golden age, "the thing about first impressions is you only get one of them" they could butch him up all they want but ill always think of him as the moriarty acting like will ferrell from zoolander

It makes me sad that you think that line about first impressions originated on the fucking Simpsons...

In other news, love the show, can't wait for the new season.
