I saw it again this afternoon. Liked it even more the second time around. I found myself caring more for the characters. I'm not sure what that says about the movie itself, but I had the same feeling with TFA. Familiarity seems to be important for Star Wars. I have no idea if the original trilogy played the same way because I have no objectivity with those movies or characters anymore
I was saying the same thing yesterday offline. It's ingrained. I've no perspective anymore when it comes to 4-6.

Loved it. Much better than FA IMO. Liked it more than ANH but less than ESB.

Only a couple small nitpicks...NOTHING that took away from the film.

Vaders outfit was off. The neck piece of the helmet seemed to flare away too much at the base. I think we are used to the video game Vaders where the helmet is tucked under the shoulder pads/chest piece. Also the console swayed when he walked when 1st introduced. Looked weird.

The beginning of the movie felt thrown together. Too much hopping from place to place. But by the time the 3rd act was on us, it was a masterpiece!

Things I loved.

Best space battle ever. The Light Speed entrance of the capital ships were amazing well done, and timed perfectly. I mean the shit was amazing in 3D. When NotAdmiralAkbar looked down over the planet via the view port...shit was amazing.

The visuals overall were just flat out beautiful.

I KNOW people will have an issue with CGI Tarkin and PL. But come on...It HAD to have fool some people. The Tarkin scenes were VERY well done IMO. Was not expecting PL though. That was cool.

Ok...That Vader entrance on the ship may have been the baddest shit in a Star Wars movie ever!!!! When the light saber lit up the hallway I got goose bumps. When he started choking the fuck outta everyone...I almost wet myself!

8/10 for me. Loved it!

Better than FA, a solid top 4 movie in the series, not sure I would really bump out any of the originals for it to be top 3, but it got close.

It was so much less preachy than TFA, I think that is what made me like it better.

It wouldn't be that hard to do, considering there were actors playing both characters, and they just CGI'd their faces. It wasn't just people talking into thin air.

Tarkin was a little off-putting, too uncanny valley towards the end of his scenes.
I actually felt like they avoided going full Uncanny Valley with Tarkin, which is what's so impressive. Could you imagine a movie trying to pull that even a few years ago, a human and a CGI human standing next to each other in plain view, without making any attempt to hide the CG person? The fact they could manage that without the entire audience flinching back at the Wrongness of it is worth a nod of respect.

The fact that no one noticed how sharp Tarkin's knees were means the CGI was a success.

CGI Tarkin is also a lot better in 2D, due to less fine detail being noticeable compared to the 3D. I personally though there were a couple moments were it looked off, but overall it was the best CGI of a real person I have seen since Tron 2.0 with young Jeff Bridges and Bruce B in that movie (which was good, but noticeable). People who are picking on that are reaching for something to be edgy about, imo. Or the kind of derp who wants to see Tarkin recast with a gay black trans otherkin....

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D and hot damn this is a gorgeous movie. Yeah, the CGI bits were off if you're looking for them, but didn't impact my enjoyment at all and they were done pretty damn well. Was a tad bit slow in the early->middle part of the movie but holy shit that last act was on fucking point. Seat shaking while the ATs were coming out of the mist, that fucking entrance for the Executor, goddamn. For a movie where I knew the ending already, this shit kept me on the edge of my seat. Some minor nitpicks, but fuck those, the movie delivered where it needed to. The characters were all at the very least likable enough to care about their part in the story, I thought. K-2 was fucking awesome with just the right kind of humor without spoiling the mood. Can't wait to see it again.

Not sure where I'd rank it other than above the prequels and TFA. We rewatched ANH last night and unfortunately the only movie I had on VHS as a kid was RotJ and I swear ESB was never on TV, I've maybe seen it single digit times. Will have to rewatch it now.

That was a great star wars movie, definitely in the top 4 for me. I'm fine without the crawl, one of those things that separates it from the main star wars movie trilogies, they'll probably do the same for the Han Solo movie. Everything else like showing planet titles and jumping from planet to planet seems a lil nit picking really, it was very short on those scenes and just setting up the main characters to come, they probably could have spent more time on them but then I'm sure we would see complaints that the movie was dragging from the start.

My main complaints were stuff just out there in the open, the main switch for the communicator is sitting on that panel out in the middle of an open area, not even in the bunker behind it. The panel to calibrate the satellite dish was sitting on a panel on a mini tower out on a platform out in the opening high up on the building.

Donnie Yen was great, K2-SO was great, the visuals were great, the fleet battle was great was wishing for more.

Saw it, loved it. Edge of my seat for the segment on Scarif.
Watching all of the redshirts get butchered in the final scenes as the plans escaped on the corvette was just what the dr ordered.
It was odd having the main protagonist change from jaded rogue to optimistic leader in the blink of an eye but fuck it.

Just came back from seeing it, I loved it. I didn't see the time go by.

I enjoyed that they essentially they explained the weakness of the Death Star in a way that makes sense, since that was always a weak plot point of ANH.

It was darker than I expected.

Can't wait to see it again.

Are people really in here singing the praises of this mediocre garbage? You people will suck the dick of anything that says Star Wars on it.

Holy shit @ calling it the 4th best SW movie. So you're saying it's better than the three shitfest prequels and the paint by numbers remake of Ep 4 that they had the nerve to call a new Star Wars movie? WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!

This Galaxy Quest ripoff isn't even as good as the prequels.
Oh man lets put these plans in this needlessly complicated place and have all this dumb shit set up to push forward the movie but in reality would make zero fucking sense to set up that way.

You know something is wrong when your best character is a bit part robot. Can we please get the fuck away from the trilogy and characters no one cares about? These side stories where we already know the fucking outcome are pointless and boring.

I can't believe people are eating this shit up either, but I guess the same shit was going on for Force Awakens, fucking memberberries errwhere.

Dunno, like all Star Wars prequels, it took itself way to serious (with the possible exception of the droid and the Spaceballs planet shield). Dodgy CGI also kinda gave it a prequel vibe.

Still one of the better Star Wars prequels, but not Original-trilogy or TFA material for me.

Salty fucks? lmao

Dipshits like you are the reason we're getting these soulless, pointless, mediocre movies.

Does this movie set the all time low for Star Wars villains? A weepy administrator hoping for a pat on the head from the Emperor? If you think that's acceptable than I really have to question if you're a Star Wars fan at all. A series that sets the bar for one of the all time baddest motherfucking villains of all time and we get this shit?

And no a cameo by Darth Vader doesn't count. But let's talk about that for a second. Isn't it a little too on the nose for him to fucking watch Leia's ship escape? How does that even make any sense with the events that follow? "I don't know what you're talking about. I am a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan..." No bitch I just saw you pull away in this ship during an attack on an Imperial base!

And how about those Stormtroopers, motherfuckers have sunk so low that a god damn blind dude with a stick is taking them out. What's the fucking point of that armor anyways?

Stupid, but yeah keep eating this shit up and asking for more shit instead of something better. People like you disgust me, instead of getting a proper Star Wars story about something we don't already know the fucking ending to we get this crap. Bioware was absolutely right to stay far the fuck away from the Trilogy.

Sad these movies aren't even half as good as their animated offerings.

Krennic isn't a weepy administrator begging for a cookie from the Emperor. He's trying to navigate his way through the Imperial hierarchy and go around Tarkin to assume control of the Death Star once he's finished overseeing it's construction. To in effect become the next Tarkin. He's an achievement hound with status being it's own reward. Unfortunately for him Tarkin's background and experience in both governance and the military as well as his personal history before he rose to prominence (of which the Emperor, and Vader, are very aware) make him ill-matched for that task. What we see unfold in R1 are the chickens from his chess game with Tarkin coming home to roost and his appeal to Vader is an attempt to go over the Grand Moff's head before can say "checkmate".

Krennic is remorseless, calculating, and very skilled at reading others and guaging how best to manipulate them. It was he who got the Geonosians to do most of the work constructing the Death Star. But of course the movie doesn't go into any of that, because you'd end up with a 3 hour+ movie a third of which most people would rather not sit through. Long games of political intrigue can play well in a weekly episodic series like GoT, not so much in a feature film from a series known more for it's action sequences. That's why it's covered in a novel instead.

Isn't it a little too on the nose for him to fucking watch Leia's ship escape? How does that even make any sense with the events that follow? "I don't know what you're talking about. Exactly.

Leia tried a weak play with the diplomat card. It was always a weak play though, even before what we witnessed in R1. The Imperials disabled and boarded the Tantive IV above Tatooine, nowhere near Alderaan. R1 made that make more sense because Scarif, where the battle took place, is very close to Tatooine and also showed why Vader knowing that she was lying and was a traitor wasn't just some hunch on his part.
