I think the wisdom tooth thing is really descriptive of how fucked your priorities get in the military. I recall training at Fort Polk at Cajun Viper for weeks and just hating life. A guy lost his NVGs and for three days we're standing in a line police calling a fucking swamp. Morning of day 3 some non-rate gets bit by a snake and when he goes 'fuck, snake!' about ten guys rush towards him literally hoping they'd also get bit by a snake to get out of this clusterfuck of a 'training' exercise.

The Marine Corps does weird things to your sense of what is important.

It's important to understand the context in which they are setting the stage. You're being trained in 6 weeks to deal with conditions you've certainly never experienced (at least up until that point). If they fail to ingrain habits and behaviors endemic to the corps they might be sending you off to death. Rewiring anyone to think properly under those conditions could probably be done in a different manner, but it takes a certain level of stress and discomfort to accomplish that goal in a period of 6 weeks that took life 18 years up until that point.

I hated my life while in Boot, it's not till after I was out that I realized it may have been the best thing that ever happened to me. Hell, it's not just the aspect of surviving combat you could reasonably say that life is a warzone.
