I play a lot of Rein and he's by far my favorite. But its exactly right. I am at 1800 now after I got drunk and tanked by 2200 score by playing a bunch of chars i'm shitty with. God damn is this game streaky too.

Its extremely noticeable on Rein when your team isn't killing shit no matter how much dmg you block or opportunities you create with Hammer.

My kid dinged 3000. He had been meandering but had some kind of epiphany and has been on a tear. Won like 10 straight games last night. I was standing behind him watching him play and he is just devastating everyone on Genji, protecting healers, murdering 5 at a time with his ult, etc... glorious to watch. Also jumps right off Genji and goes to Ana or Mercy or Roadhog as needed. Those are the heroes I see him play all the time.

So I don't know what to think of my situation here. I bought this game after the last free weekend and was placed at 2300. I'm not a great FPS guy but I don't feel like I'm bad. I quickly went down to 1000 mostly due to playing this game while drinking yeah I know whatever can't complain.

Today I was like "OK lets get out of bronze" and played a bunch all day. I still can't win. By that I mean I play characters that I feel like can carry, mostly Soldier, and I wind up with 35-50 elims, 3-4 golds, 5-10 deaths, but we still lose half the games. I'm not playing support at all and will do hog or zarya if I have to tank and still usually wind up with gold elims anyways.

What do I do to get out of bronze hell? Typically as Soldier I just try to take out the front line and keep myself up. Should I flank more? Seems like when I do (non ult, when I flank and ult I almost always get 2-6 kills because yeah bronze) I don't make as much of an impact as I could and am more vulnerable to getting sniped. I'm not being a huge "stick in the pile" guy in that most of the time I'm at least flanking slightly and not sitting there in the middle in the maps that allow me to do that. That makes rocket use non optimal but seems to get the kills. Speaking of which I somehow just today got the "kill 2 people with one use of rockets" achievement which surprised me.

IDK frustrating that I'm murdering these people so much and not getting anywhere. Should I give up on Soldier and focus elsewhere? Anyone else crawled out of bronze?

if people arent half ass'ed doing their job, there isnt much you can do. Soldier does massive damage. If you switch you have hope that other person can play a soldier. lol

You just have to have people who want to communicated and who can pay attention.

You mention your stats a lot.

One big problem is people focusing on stats and not the objective.

Elims don't mean much if both teams are just slaughtering each other over and over. It's about Objective time. Get 3 on a payload, 3 on a point, etc to push/cap at optimal speeds. Use crowd control to get people off objectives so you can cap. Save ultimate to counter enemy final push.

Focus on saving/holding objective as long as possible and don't focus on damage/elims. You'll always have gold elims/damage as Soldier if you're doing your job right. Part of the reason is cause you'll only have 1 other DPS to compete with, sometimes 0 other DPS.

Don't funnel into fights 1 by 1. Wait for your team and push together.
Coordinate in Voice Chat.
I do NOT use voice chat simply because I have sleeping babies when I play, but if I was still a no-lifer I'd be controlling the team for sure. The best teams are the ones where at least 1 guy is calling shots. Same shit back in MMO days when the best guilds were ones with "Raid Leaders". It applies to every game, you need a shot caller.

If your team lacks a shot caller but other team has 1, you're going to be toast.

Anytime someone brags about their gold medals, my immediate reaction is that they're new to the game.

I play Soldier/Mei a lot right now.
When I'm on Mei I might get 1 or 2 medals (not even golds), but team still wins. Unfortunately there's no medals for Damage Blocked / Crowd Control / Enemies Trapped / etc.
When I'm on Soldier I average 4-5 golds a round.

It's a real problem lol. When we can get our team together, we can win much more than we lose. The moment I go out and start PUG'ing, I erase all our work and then some. It's so hard to get a bunch of old guys with families together but I get hooked on the game and can't wait half the time.

I managed to do it, go from 1400 to 2000, so bronze to gold...but I am not sure how possible that would be right now.

For the past 2 weeks or so, I find competitive to be unplayable. I don't know if it's because a lot of people got the game for the holidays and there are a lot of new people, or if people have reached their goal for the season and stop caring about ranking up to the next level.

Whatever the reason is, competitive is horrible right now. I am not a "play the meta" guy, far from it...I like 2-2-2 group but I'm generally fine with 1 tank and 1 healer at minimum. 2 is better but whatever...but right now, it very often happens that we don't even have a healer or a tank...I'll try to fill the role we are missing when possible but very often I'll play healer and we don't have a tank or vice versa. It's just plain horrible.

As some people have mentioned, the best way to climb is communication. I find that the vast majority of my wins is when people communicate. You don't have to talk a lot, just call basic stuff, and it will go a long way to help you climb.

I always solo PUG btw, I rarely use the stay as group feature unless I am in group that communicates a lot. Staying as a group is cool, but you have to remember that it will put you against other group...and some of those are not PUGS that stay together but organized groups and you won't be a match for those usually, especially if you end up with a large group. I find that 2-3 is optimal. If you stay as group with 4+ you will face a lot of very organized group of friends that will have superior communication and it's hard to beat those.

I'm sticking to QP right now, while the group composition is generally bad, I care less, and I am having fun practicing heroes I don't usually play in competitive. I am playing a lot of McCree, my aim sucks, but he is a good character I find to practice aiming with. I am now better at taking out Pharah with him than I am with soldier. I should go back to soldier after 2 weeks on McCree, my aim might be better with him now. :)

I love the game but right now I am a bit disenchanted by the state of competitive.

Good feedback thanks, not talking about golds and elims to brag (FFS...) but more to show I'm not totally hopeless. I will try to be more objective focused and frankly haven't been on voice chat last couple days because um I'm embarrassed to be at SR 1000. Might try Mei she seems crazy good at these ranks if you play her well.

Not this nonsense again. Ya'll should just join a support group :p

What do you think this is? :)

Oh, one more bit of advice...when you lose a few games and you feel like you're starting to get upset...stop and play QP, because you'll just end up losing more.

Mei is great if you have teammates that will follow up, because she can't carry alone. You can freeze and trap people but then what? It really depends how I'm feeling about the team. I also choose Mei more on Defense since she can stall objectives big-time.. Sometimes those extra meters you've stalled will lead your team to a win. Stop them from getting a checkpoint or from taking a control point, etc. It's all about objectives when I play Mei. I use walls to keep people from contesting and to isolate enemies for easy kills.

I also play Symmetra a lot now whom is really OP on Defense. Her shield is great for giving Rein a break, her turrets force enemies to waste time on them, and her primary attack can mow down teams. Also her teleporter is a decent substitute for a Mercy.

A Symm can actually carry a team a lot harder than a Mei since she doesn't need follow-up, just click on someone until they die.

They really need to do something Hanzo though. I love the character/concept but he just seems useless most of the time. It's like being short a player.

Everyone is a game changer technically kek.

To be honest though, Hanzo is actually one of the stronger dps in this tank meta. There is just the unfortunate stipulation that follows him and the high skill ceiling. Sure a player can pop a head shot or two, but can he manage to do it consistently rather than randomly? As a Hanzo main, there are often times where when I'm aiming my brain goes into nanosecond thinking, kinda like that Hanzo meme with the formula behind him lel, about players movement patterns and where they might go.

In a sense Hanzo is like a deagle while others are like the tec9 five sevens and p250s of csgo. For the longest time in csgo competitive no one really used the deagle because it was a liability, but unchanged, eventually people started making really big plays while all the other pistols still remained relevant and/or a safe pick.

With what's to come it'll be hard to say, but seagull said it best that in this tank meta, what dps you choose, does. not. matter. It's whether or not you can stop their dps too. The reason 76 is high p/r isn't because he's stronger, he's more of a safe pick. Well rounded, ect.

IDK frustrating that I'm murdering these people so much and not getting anywhere. Should I give up on Soldier and focus elsewhere? Anyone else crawled out of bronze?

Counting your gold medals is fine, and I disagree with the objective time statement most people are saying above.

Over the winter break, I got with a group of friends in queue-able range and just went ham on farming boxes, managed to tank from 3750-3850 average to 3200. I spent the later half of my break in a masochist solo queue trying to pick apart why I couldn't win games. Throwing out the ones that were lost due to bad ults combo/syn and such and trying to figure out the ones that were just flat jokes.

I found that it's less about throwing damage, but utilitizing the right damage. I had to spend my climb from 3200 to 3600 on 76 because locking Hanzo was an immediate toxicity that I wasn't trying to bother with. I bounced up and down and eventually made my way back to 3700, and will continue the climb when I get my opportunities.

I found that figuring out what to damage, specifically as 76 was the way to go. It wasn't just what, it was where. As 76 you can essentially hide and heal a lot of times.

Take Gib for an example. Sure you can move down and under with a payload, but you're gonna get hit with a damage sponge whether it's rein shield or DVa matrix, so forth. Securing the high ground plays a more vital role than being a dps on the payload. You're causing the opponent to waste resource in either fleshing you out, fighting, or making a grave mistake of leaving you alone.. Which more than half the time, it's what will happen. By no means I'm not saying neglect the payload, but if you're holding gold object time as a dps, it could be contributing to your loss.

You also got to figure out priority targets, and it's not always the pharah.. Sometimes you can honestly leave her alone, because you'll be wasting resources when it is in fact something else preventing shit from going down.

When it really gets down to it, though. Technically there is no wrong answer, just a bad decision, a bad call, too soon, too late. It's up to you to find those key moments in which will propel you and your team.

gauze gauze I'll say that last night I was less critical of people playing Hanzo as one guy who mains him absolutely went off. I'm never really the guy that requests people to change as I would like everyone to play their aces and have a good time but typically groups will pressure the Hanzo to change as they were trying last night. He stuck to his guns and we went into the match. He was superb. Never really died, made key plays, and was a real part of our success. I've have not seen many Hanzo's play to his skill level but when played correctly, he definitely has his place in this world.

I never ask someone specific to play something else...ever.

I'll suggest that we could use a healer/tank or an extra healer/tank, and only when I am a healer/tank already...since if I am a DPS I might as well switch myself to fill the role. :)

It's the same if during the match, I find that we need a counter to the other team, I'll suggest that someone could switch to fill that role...if I cannot do it myself(being the only healer for example), or I'll suggest that I can switch if someone fills in my role.

I really try to be as positive as possible, usually a team that ends up arguing or toxic won't win...you're better off with a team in good spirit that is not optimal, than an optimal but toxic team...in my experience anyways.

Having a DPS asking another DPS to switch to tank or healer is one of the thing I find the most aggravating in the game. Of course they won't switch because they are always the most awesome <insert hero here> player. The vast majority of the time they end up being shit and the reason we lose anyways. :)

I play Mei a lot and get plenty of ragers asking me to switch. Just had it happen today actually. Team was crumbling, no coordination, the 3-man premade decided I had to switch instead of focusing on their own play, so while I was busy racking up gold elims (as Mei), they were using their time typing inflammatory remarks. Feelsgoodman.

on control maps if we lose 1st round I usually just say "that didn't work lets try shuffling up roles" and lock a tank or whatever and yeah some times that even makes us win which feels good. Other than that I just let people do their own thing, even in bronze people realize you can't win with no healers.
