I figure'd I'd share some of the better highlights of my side-job hobby. Which is people fucking up and hurting themselves!

The thread title is about the concept of downsizing (smaller parachutes) in order to go faster. Lots of faggots get one ones they are not ready for and wipe the fuck out. Usually in what is called Swooping which will become apparent in the first few videos linked.

Here's a good one. You judge them on how many flips, broken bones and most importantly if they lost their shoes.

I've only been skydiving once but there was a dude in another stick who must have had a chute like that. When I watched the plane going overhead with the bigger chutes, they'd take a few seconds to deploy. This other guy.. it looked weird. Like all of a sudden there was just a fully deployed chute in the empty sky. He bit the very tip of his tongue off when the canopy opened.

Hard opening happens sometimes. Likely trash packed the canopy into the container (backpack). I do that sometimes but generally I know my current canopy well and know how to avoid it. Smaller canopies do open faster just because there is less material to open up.

I'm nearing 1000 jumps and like 50 BASE jumps off the bridge in Idaho.

The guy BASE jumping off the bridge. That didn't seem like a chute problem, more like a poor height judgment. Chute didn't even open before he hit the water. Hilarious.

The leg one hurt to watch.

Oh it was. But its hilarious and never gets old.

Technically all of these are poor height judgement though! None of these guys have problems with their chutes. But they misjudge their acceleration, where they are in the sky, dive too far, etc.

This is a discipline called "swooping" where you take a very small, very fast parachute in order to dive it at the ground at high speed. This was why he was spiraling towards the ground, in order to gain as much speed as possible.

Then "swoop" across the water dragging one foot across the top of the water while maneuvering those obstacles. They also wear a weight belt in order to increase speeds. In this case his timing or something was off. Causing him to swoop closer to the ground than desired and wipe out.

The margin of error here is very small. Don't fuck up!

Nah, that guy is prob a pro and just messed up this one time. There are a lot of ways to safely get that good.

The problem is that the sport attracts people with huge egos and these are the same people who happily push the envelope on such things.

TJT you jump over at skydive city? That looks painful. I've seen some minor wipeouts but nothing that hard at my DZ, yet.

Not nearly as many as you. I'm newer to the sport than you are. Taking a 6 month break due to unrelated injury.

I took a 4 month hiatus due to shitty people and clique mentality in the Austin area. So I mostly just jump at Spaceland in Houston now.

Really? That's unfortunate. Most skydivers I meet are chill as hell and friendly. Then again I only really hang at one DZ.

Yeah, so in Florida. DeLand is the place to avoid if you want to just chill, have fun and skydive. Cliqueish as people there are actually training for events. I can get that so I didn't really go there. I am at the point where I generally don't like to skydive with the intention of it being a zoo and not learning something.

Austin has the issue of having two smaller dropzones, one that doesn't really give a shit about fun jumpers and the other that, while I like it, has insane cliqueish mentality going on. This has a lot to do with the Tunnel HQ being in Austin. So you either A.) know the right people and get free tunnel time constantly and are in the club or B.) Pay up like a pleb and hope you can join them sometimes.

Its generally okay if you're belly flying with people but if you want to progress freefly and you're not a tunnelbro... you're kinda fucked. Which I find shitty and I have like 10 hours in the tunnel. Just not 30+ like these assholes.

Spaceland has like 10x more people hanging around at any given time so you don't have as big of an issue with it. Skydive City, Sebastian, Jump Florida, Clewiston... I never had these problems at all.
