His actual writing though is amazing. Its ridiculously readable. Like a melange of story telling and almost poetry level prose. You just of kind glide from page to page effortlessly when reading it so much you don't notice or mind the shitty plot things or the Harry Potter-ish undertones. I think he can craft sentences at least as well as Gaiman.

I understand what you are trying to say...but that's a fucking huge insult to Gaiman. The first book took him over a decade to complete. He was an undergrad for 9 years and his book wasn't at a sellable level until 7 years after that. What do you think he did all of that time as an undergrad? The 7 years after? The first book was solid and set up some great expectations. This story was going to be awesome, but how could he fit all of that story in just three books? We find out in the next book. It was a gratuitous Gary Stu where the story ambles along with no real point. Rothfuss took forever to get the first book out. That was the entire story. That's why he's taking forever and doing other things and milking the fuck out of it. There's nothing here. Guy wasted his entire load and has already been self-castrated.

So, this is kinda interesting..

He raised over 2m for his charity this year, and as a reach goal he had "do a Q&A on book 3". They hit it, so... solid infoz soon.

Does this have a release date yet?

Or is Rothfuss busy fingering that disgusting beard into his navel?

I read a summary of his q&a on book 3. Sounds like book 3 is years away if ever. However please purchase his 10 year anniversary edition of book 1 next year. Oh and it's real hard for him to work on the book because trump.

Rothfuss is continuing the proud tradition of fat bearded fantasy authors writing a couple good books then deciding they can't be fucked and sticking both middle fingers up to their fans.

On the bright side, he went straight to "nah I'm rich now, why would I write lol" without dragging things out with another few books that slowly decline in quality to the point where you're just begging for them to end.

Fuck that guy, I am to the point that i no longer truly care if he ever releases another book beyond wanting to know if my speculations about Kvothe turn out to be right.

I read through this whole thread to get an idea if I wanted to start these books. I do not, but I did enjoy reading all of these comments. Probably more than I would like reading the books.

The first book is excellent. Probably spent his whole life coming up with it and had nothing left after that

Lolled because it works on two levels.

I think "excellent" is a bit much. It has some great elements and the prose is generally quite high quality, but it also some really derivative crap, some cringe-worthy subplots (school bully, romance) and a terrible ending.

I enjoyed it when I read it the first time, but I couldn't get through it a second, and I'm a fairly compulsive re-reader.

So is this guy done? We've seen him post about mundane crap for over a year now with no book update. He's not even mentioned writing as far as I can see, just his political views/World Builders stuff. I am convinced he has no book three ideas at all. He has just been dragging this all along to try to figure something out to get his fat a$$ off the fire. The legions of fans he still has stuns me, his writing was enjoyable but not great. Book two had way to many cringe worthy moments to be called great.

Looks like George RR Martin Syndrome.

Nah, GRRM has done a fuckload more with his life. He did a fuckload more at Rothfuss's age. He did a fuckload more last year. Rothfuss took 16 years to make one book. He cobbled together a shit tier second one and realized he was finished. GRRM had three extremely solid books in 5 years and at least his distractions are a top notch TV series, an alternate series for kids, and trying to release one more book before he dies. GRRM pisses me off with his lack of focus and absolutism about his story, but Rothfuss is a one trick pony milking the last bits of fame before the window closes.

Rothfuss reminds me of...Daniel Myrick of the Blair Witch Project. Good for one but not good for two.

I still maintain that the first book was really good, but there’s no chance he puts out anything above mediocre going forward. If he puts out anything at all.

How about Butcher contracts Rothfuss to ghost-write his stupid steampunk series so Butcher can get back to pumping out Dresden Files. Sounds like a win to me.

I reread book one prior to book two. I will say the charm wore off on a second reading and even further after I finished reading book two. Basically, Rothfuss is very good at two things: detailing out a setting (worldbuilding) and building anticipation. Everything else he's mediocre to shitty at. Book one had a great introduction and built tons of anticipation for the story and the development of the character. Book two then shat all over that and said yea basically here's all this dumb shit and SSSEEEEEXXXXXXXXXXX. I have very little hope for three ever coming out much less being good.

Honestly, I think Rothfuss worked super hard developing his lifelong rpg character idea into book one and had thought so much about it and the world it all worked. Then book two he panicked, discovered he's really not that great a story teller and popped out every cliche he could get away with. Finally he got depressed and realized he was a hack trying to write anything satisfying for book three so here we are.

Shit, these two books were on my backlog and next to listen to after my current series.

I was hoping there'd be a satisfying conclusion to the series before I listened to it, so I might have to skip this for a bit.

It's so hard to find good fantasy that I haven't read now, I'm feeling a huge void after finishing everything Joe Abercrombie put out too.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you've read Sanderson. The Hundredth Queen was really good (book 2 was okay, it kept me captivated but it wasn't anything special). Song of Edmon is a pretty interesting world. I thought The City Below was really good (another where book 2 just isn't as good).

I have a lot of trouble finding good Fantasy or Scifi that I haven't read. So much of it is just the same stories
