I saw this tonight. It was acceptable, but I didn't love it. I'll give it a D. I think my daughter would enjoy it when she gets a little older, but that's the extent of it. I think my biggest problem with the movie was the overuse of magic just for the sake of having magic.
Harry potter magic has always been like that. The most stupid and impractical shit. Moving staircases, living paintings, living candy which you have to chase to eat.. time machines they don't use. liquid luck. the rules of Quidditch..

PS. It's my opinion that Bewitched and Harry Potter share the same universe.

I get that 20s America was actually like that, but if it's a theme I expect the good guys to fight it and not just go along with it without question. It wasn't pleasant to watch and jarred with the pretty animals theme, I wasn't in the mindset for it - I wanted an adventure.

it's funny you say that, because the only bonafide good guys in the film were against the purity laws. The main guy commented on how dumb they were, and clearly the sisters didn't like them since the one brought a muggle into her house, and the other was about 5 minutes away from dropping her panties for him in the last scene.

I think the point is that the American wizard community is scared and close minded and definitely not 'good guys'. But then, in the potterverse, the wizards in power never seem to be good guys, so maybe she wasn't specifically trying to shit talk America.

Yeah they pay lip service to not liking it but they still let the guy take a mind wipe. It's a movie not reality, they need to take down nazi execution lady or hint at it for the sequel. Not "ok I guess we just live in facism", this is a world where Hermione is a dentist or murdered for exhibiting magical powers as a muggle.

I bet that auror takes her job back too, maybe she can hunt down her sister and half blood children in the next movie. She can put them in the happy execution chamber she nearly died in herself.

Also is Grindelwald going to immediately escape or are they not putting him in the death chamber because reasons? We already know that he lives to become wizard Hitler. Maybe they can haydonchristianson Depp into the Grimdelwald scene in Deathly Hallows.

The tone of the movie is just off. I'm looking forward to the movie about the potions textbook guy that's a romantic comedy all about love potion rape.

The no wizard/muggle relationship rule wasn't about "purity," it was about secrecy. They had a very hard-line stance on any muggles knowing anything about magic because of American history like Salem.

The point to the execution chamber was that Graves/Grindlewald was going outside of the normal process to get these two out of his way. He even has a line like, "I'll answer to the president." You really think a magical society that patterns itself after America allows summary judgement?

Only one thing really bothered me about this movie. I told myself a long time ago that I couldn't bitch about "handwavey explain shit away with magic" in the potterverse. But this movie really pushed it. Especially with how obliviate and the obliviate potion at the end was supposed to work.

Blu rays are out. Enjoyed watching, more for the animals and CGI magic than the cast or story. Eddie Redmayne was just awful, whether as written or acted he came across as a massive autistic sperglord who mumbles everything and that just detracted a lot. A weird setup between a jumanji like "animals are good" story and a "evil wizards do fucked up shit" that ultimately makes both plots weak, if they really wanna make 5 movies they could have simplified this movie a lot I think.

Still, enjoyable for any harry potter fan, visually its a treat but character and story wise its kinda scraping the barrel. +1 for hot women being into fat dudes, you know its a magic world.

mild necro.
finally gotten round to watching this and it was pretty good. the story was actually more interesting than the CGI fest with some exceptions. the angsty teen with evil super powers angle has been done to death. Lucas buried it long ago. Akira was laughing at him. they should have skipped that whole business and had it focused on grindelwald. the fat guy and hot babe stuff was funny. i was just happy they didnt cast Kevin James.

Saw this a couple weeks ago on HBO. I enjoyed it. MC was definitely on the autism scale. Not quite aspergers, but closer to it than normie. They hint quite pointedly that this was due to war trauma.

I enjoyed this more than the harry potter films for the most part but they really dropped the ball with the villain. They should have built up Colins character a lot better
