proposed rule change:

what happened this year that instigated that proposal? i remember i saw it and at the time agreed that it should be unsportsmanlike, but i can't remember the details...

Will be the only thing Chip Kelly will be remembered for in the NFL other than being paid by two different owners millions of dollars to not coach in 2017.

I can't help but think this move to Vegas is going to backfire hard. I wonder how the Oakland fan base will react to this. Will be an interesting few years considering they wouldn't start in Vegas til 2020.

Source: Raiders' move to Vegas approved 31-1

WTF is wrong with the Dolphins? (other than the obvious: everything)

Couple of things off the top of my head.

1.) Dolphins owner had to pay his own way for stadium renovation and is ticked off that the Raiders just got massive public funding.
2.) Dolphins owner has a decent amount of money tied up in Oakland interests and is showing good faith to the community.
3.) Vegas will be huge for visiting teams fans as a destination in and off itself. Miami previously was probably the best location for visiting fans from a weather/entertainment standpoint if you wanted to catch an out of town game during the winter.
4.) Another city on the "regular" rotation for Super Bowl hosting competition.

edit for Keg:

No way this backfires unless the actual Vegas locals don't buy in. The Raiders while not at Cowboys/Packers levels are very much a national team. It also isn't the longest flight or drive from CA for their fans there and they will get tons of visiting fans popping the vacation and a football game package.

2nd edit:

Kind of amusing to consider Vegas just nabbed two Big Four franchises when just a few years ago all you heard was how Vegas couldn't happen becuase hurr durr gambling!

Maybe this will mark the point where we finally stop pretending gambling and steroids are going to ruin the NFL, and acknowledge that they're something that will be ever present (and easily arguable that they're essential) to professional sports.

Las Vegas will never host the super bowl. Having casinos take that game off the board is the dumbest thing I've ever read.

I don't gamble so fill me in. Is their any reason they wouldn't be betting on the game just because it is local? Or does taking it off the board mean something else.

edit: The only thing I could google up quickly was a couple of stories regarding the NHL move, in which the speculation was no such ban or regulations would be put in place to stop betting on the local team while they played at home.

The NFL is not allowing Vegas casinos to have a line on games in Vegas. So if I go see the Pats play the Raiders in Vegas, I can't bet on the game in the casino I'm staying in. If the Super Bowl is in Vegas there will be no action in Vegas casinos.

Not sure why any owner would vote against a team moving. Had no idea teams moving had to pay other owners these relocation fees

What is the rationale behind this? That doesn't make any sense to me

Maybe they're the one team in the league who are voting in the interest of the hundreds of thousands Oakland Raiders fans.

Support your team more (build them a stadium like almost every other city does) and you'll keep your team. I have no sympathy for local fans that vote against their own interests when it comes time to build stadiums, then whine and cry when the team leaves.

So the city is the bad guy here because they wouldn't fork over hundreds of millions in taxpayer money so the billionaire owner can use that money to continue to generate massive wealth for himself? The way I see it, the city of Oakland is one of few to stand up to the ridiculous green mail that's going on all over the place between sports teams and local government.

Oakland had made a very reasonable proposal to the Raiders but it was far short of the money shower that Las Vegas threw at them. Basically, the owner sold out the Oakland fan base for short term gains.

Cost of doing business. If you don't pay for the stadium, another city will. Either fork over the money or wave bye-bye. I understand not wanting to vote to spend the money that way, but don't act like a fucking victim when another city steals your team. Suck it up, buttercup, and deal with the consequences of your decisions.

It still baffles me that cities end up footing so much of the bill for these stadiums. The NFL and their owners are filthy rich, they should absolutely be paying for their own damn stadiums.

As long as there are 32 cities willing to do it, they are fools to pay for it themselves. I guarantee you, the NFL owners are no fools. (in business... we can discuss their football acumen at another time)
