Some places are pretty good on prices but I much prefer knowing I put everything into the case and custom chose every single part.

Worth it?

I dunno, it only takes an hour or two to toss together a PC.

Is it still worth it to build your own rigs now? I've done that for the past 12 years or so, not any kind of expert mind you. Just found the "best" parts and put them together in a case.

I kinda would rather just buy something now. Used for gaming mostly, and work... but I primarily use the laptop for work.

It's worth it to me just to be able to pick a non obnoxiously lit case. Just give me a plain black box filled with good parts.

I wouldn't buy a GTX 1060. If you are going to spend 300, spend a tad more to get a 1070 regardless of use case. Because sooner or later you will want to play more games, and the 1060 is anywhere from a 20-40% power hit depending on the game.

Kinda strapped right now, so i think 1060 is the best im gonna be able to do, other than black desert online i dont think im gonna be playin insane graphically intense games

cheapest 1070 is i think like 430$? around that from what i saw

I do a basic Windows install + updates (no apps except basic tools/drivers)
Reboot with Fedora Linux USB stick
gnome-disks to backup Windows partition to img file on external USB stick
My Steam apps & other games always go on their own data drive.

What's a good place to go to find solid builds now. I used to just go to Anandtech forums or HardOCP. Is Tom's Hardware reliable? I'm looking at the 2k build

What monitor resolution (1080p, 1440p, 4k) will you be gaming at? What types of games do you typically play? Do you use programs that utilize multi/hyper-threading?

You can turn that $2k build into a $2.3-2.5k build if you're patient and watch deals from a few sites like SlickDeals and /r/buildapcsales and KinjaDeals.

Sorry I didn't respond to folks who responded to my last post! I went through the process of replacing my motherboard and processor in the same ole Antec 900. For some reason I thought it'd be fun, but it sucked ass all the way. I forgot how much ass it can be trying to fuck around with a cooling system. Still, worked out in the end, I guess.

I haven't played anything other than Total War yet, but after a clean install I only managed to squeak out ~5 fps more than my old i5 overclocked at 4.2 ghz, but I'm not exactly too savvy as I'm sure my posts reflect.

Hoping Battlegrounds shows some improvement, as I understand TW games are shitty for performance no matter what so we'll see. Thanks for the advice I got anyways. I appreciate it.

Hey, my 980Ti still runs anything I throw at it at 1440p !

(But yea, don't ever buy 9XX series new these days. Maybe you can find something used for cheap)
