Florida Turnpike Toll Calculator v3.1 is a handy thing if you're toll concerned - found it by accident checking to see if there's a quoted rate on the toll savings with SunPass. As I said before I think it's 70% - but it's not easy to find a quote on it for sure.

Actually clicking around it, it's completely variable discount. I see on the east route - one that goes from $1 to 0.76, another that is $0.50 no matter which payment, a $1 to $0.87... ad nauseum

So apparently the discount isn't consistent at all.

Ah for me i mean just the mclean, reston very congested area directly around dc.

Dude I love it here. Not too congested minus 7-9 am and 5-7 on fairfax or 66. MD sucks ass for sure though. The only shitty part is 66 near falls church exit.

How is the Altamonte Springs area of Florida?

I am going to be renting for a year or two. I want to make sure we are going to be there a while before I commit to buying. I will be working near UCF and don't want to pay a fortune in tolls.

I've been in Orlando since 97 and if you're working near UCF, then you probably dont want to not live in Altamonte. You'll be avoiding I-4 but you end up taking 436 which gets quite busy during rush hour. You'd probably be looking at a 45 minute commute. I work right outside UCF and live in the Winter Springs area. I would highly recommend you try to stay there or Oviedo. My commute door to door is about 20-25 minutes with manageable traffic. I didnt see if you have kids, planning on having kids, bought a kid, etc..but Seminole county has the top schools in central FL. You could get an apartment right outside of UCF but youre going to have to deal with the college crowd. You can also live south of UCF near Waterford Lakes (outdoor mall area) and Cloak & Blaster. This is an ideal spot because there's lots of shops and things to do. Oviedo has lots of good restaurants and things to do but it's much quieter than the UCF area.

I drive by this apt complex all the time and its fairly new. If I was looking for an apt, then I'd check it out. parkplaceoviedo.com

Much like everyone says, the summers are typically hot and muggy but that's the price I pay to be able to golf and hit the theme parks in Jan/Feb when it's 68 degrees out. I-4 is going under major construction and you should avoid it at all costs. Get a sunpass toll reader and utilize it to get to the theme parks using the 417 or 429 if on the West side of town. It's 45 minutes to WDW from my house. Do get a FL annual pass if theme parks are your thing. If you go about 6-7 times/year then it pays itself off. We have the premium WDW pass so I get to golf at one of their courses for free year round and parking is free. Do the theme parks during non-peak times of year mid Jan to mid March and Sept to Nov. Go to water parks during the summer while all the other sucker tourists sweat at the main parks. Go downtown on weekends to get your club/foodie/drink fill. There are some great places down there and it has improved in the past 20 years. Lots of Uber rides available all throughout Orlando.

Orlando, for me anyway, isn't as conservative/rednecky as you would think. The downtown has an awesome new theater venue, public city bike rentals, and a very diverse culture. The new Orlando City Soccer Club stadium went up last year in an attempt to gentrify downtown area west of I-4. A lot of Puerto Ricans have started migrating to central FL and it has definitely helped the soccer club but also create some of that diversity without it getting too overwhelming like Miami.

Go to WinterPark for a nice night out. Stay off of I-drive since it is a tourist trap. Make a trip to Gotha to eat at Yellow Dog Eats Yellow Dog Eats | Restaurant, Cafe & Bar in Gotha, FL (fucking phenomenal sammiches). Go to Cloak and Blaster for great board game nights. (Food is ok, but beer/mead selection is great). When you need time away from Orlando, drive down to the Keys over a long weekend (8 hrs), go to Port Canaveral (90 minute drive) and hop on a cruise ship for a quick 3 nighter (utilize vacationstogo.com for cheap prices. I did a 3 night cruise on carnival for $218 non-peak season).

Orlando has good and bad like any other city, but it's definitely growing and once you discover all the other stuff aside from the theme parks it's actually pretty cool. I've lived all over and visited many cities but I do enjoy being here. There are certainly worse places to be. Good luck. PM me if you want any other insider insight on restaurants, places to go, porn stores, etc...

Haha. I think that's the exact place we were considering back when the job hunt in Brevard was bumming me out still. Lots of great suggestions in your post - and yea, Orlando is "blue" as hell when it comes to political stuff, you might see some red stuff occasionally but even on voting maps it's one of the bluest parts of the FL map that ends up making it such a toss-up.

(Although I'd suggest Nov/Mar for WDW - I love the Epcot Festivals - "International Wine & Food" + the more recent "Garden" one)

Not done YDE - and have wanted a sammich place for when I'm out in Orange, so I'll try to keep it in mind.

That place is the tits. It used to be a well kept locals only secret, but word has gotten out and it's pretty popular now. I highly recommend you go right as they open or during non-peak hours as it's not unusual for them to run out of parking spots and have a line out the door.

Eh, I don't mind waiting, I do mind muggy Orange county slog though - I'll probably keep it in mind for off-season. Hah. Not that I usually touch Orange during on-season anyhow.

Looks like a 40 minute drive down Red Bug from where I work to where my apartment would be . I've been in Florida since Sunday and I've yet to see the sun.

Be grateful. They've had drought conditions this year. Need some rain.

I did move and I drove by this brewery over the weekend. Its just a couple miles from me. We were talking about hitting it up this weekend. The weather is crap. I can only assume people that love Florida weather have never lived in a place with actually good weather.

Orange County is awful during many seasons. Winter and late Fall are the only times I pop over there for if I'm doing something outdoors. It really depends which county and what season for Florida weather though.

"Florida weather is nice!" is marketing, the weather sucks - its meant to fool people that live in tundra hells for 4+ months of the year. North Carolina is nice weather.

What most people like about Florida is, again after living in tundras, there is no real time that the weather keeps you from doing stuff - less you count rain lol but its not for weeks with no let up...and you don't have to shovel your rain

It just washes away your house in Florida.

You spent much time on the coasts yet? Ocean breeze evens things out a lot most days in all the coastal areas I've visited. (Naples, Brevard, Tampa)

It is just as hellish as Orange during the rare days we don't have the 7 mph or so breeze going though.

Not yet but soon hopefully. I want to go to Space Coast.

Great time for night boating on the Mosquito Lagoon for a bit yet. (And contrary to the name, never seen one mosquito there)

If you're into water and nature, the bioluminessence stuff was quite an experience.

May be other spots for it too, but we launched from the NW part of the island when I went first, so I just repeat that when I take visitors to see the phenomena. (Being a 10 min drive from home reinforces not spending the energy to see if there's another too, lol)

LOL, I might be moving out to Orlando I just found out. Got an interview with Amazon to take over a HR position that's opened up. I like my current job, but I don't think I've got the energy to do headhunting until I'm ready to retire - Amazon seems like a comfy job until I'm too old to work.

But no damn way I'm gonna do that commute from out here if I do, as much as I love it out here. (Plus I want a newer place anyhow, 70's construction w/ it's natural issues is no bueno longterm)

I was really confused here because I thought Vaclav was talking about OC, CA not OC, FL. I didn't know FL had an Orange county.
