I think they have a pretty balanced approach. EQ Next basically wanted to do away with the mmorpg as we knew it. The biggest mistake being trying to revolutionize (or dispose of) the already amazing EQ faction system to make everything dynamic. VR is just taking what we know already worked and making it better.

Like with combat and mob AI, instead of just having a mob that flees at low health, you have mobs that alert others off the bat. Instead of having a mob that only focuses on the target with greatest threat, you have a mob that may favor occasionally attacking others based on their class/role/faction/race or that prefers defending or enabling allies instead.

What they've suggested is a far cry from the complete mess that SOE was proposing.

They've got some good ideas for sure. It's an overused expression, but EQN was going for revolution and VR is content with evolution. Evolution is always safer/easier/cheaper.

What I've read so far (re their dispositions) has seemed straight forward and manageable for their AI. Provided their system is simple and robust enough to maintain in case of trouble. If they are not carefull this type of system can easily get out of hand with heart stopping bugs like deadlocks and very expensive challenges that are a PITA to design test and debug around. Any added complexity in this area is also most rife for potential exploitation by users. Potential for lots of unintended consequences, some good we want (gameplay wise will be more fun) but also horrible exploits.

I really do like the direction very much though, it could add quite a bit more spice to core gameplay at the heart of group strategy. Just hope they apply KISS for the initial release and only evolve it later.

Bro come on over the the TLP servers in EQ if you miss raiding with special needs people in old games. Dakim, Sycloness, and Dumog are still around and playing PoE but they dont think this game will see the light of day.

I never played EQ back in the day so I would have no idea what I was doing.
