Yeah it just needs to keep the standoffs snug to the board is all.

I really don't like it though, trying it one more time before scrapping this model entirely.

Don't worry, if I started playing WoW, my cpu choice wouldn't matter because my wife would have killed me. And she's completely justified in that "overreaction", I act like an addict around MMO type games.

I get what you're saying about the upgrade thing. I went this long with an i5-760 though, so I didn't feel the need.
Until last year I had a 760 too. The upgrade to a 6700k was fucking insane

Well I somehow talked my wife into letting me buy a gaming desktop. I'm gonna build my own after all since I wanted to pick all the parts. It's gonna be way overkill for a while but it should hopefully be future-proof for quite a few years.

i7-7700
GTX 1070
16gb Corsair Vengeance LPX
And a slew of other goodies.

Looking forward to everything arriving.

So is AMD's strategy going to turn in to this?

I'm already planning out what RGB RAM sticks and RGB fans will be going into my 8700K build.

So, I have a legit copy of Win7 x64 and upgraded to Windows 10. New parts coming, what's my best option:
  • Clone current drive to new one and hope windows doesn't notice all the hardware change and invalidate my license?
  • Reinstall Win7 and upgrade back to Win10? I don't think that is even offered anymore.
  • Install Win10 and hope my Win7 license works?
  • Take the plunge into Linux? Not even sure Linux is an option for gaming.

You are allowed to transfer a windows license once to a new computer if you bought it at a store and it didn't come with the computer. Should have to just call their activation line and do it that way.

So I had a rough time with the NZXT Kraken X62 that I ordered so the new machine isn't online. Anyone else have experience with it?

The backplate didn't fit well and it isn't "solid" it's kind of a flexible plastic. The standoffs go into that from above up top of course and those screwed in just fine. The caps for the other side of the stand offs wouldn't screw in more than a few threads deep. I snapped one standoff in half and broke the backplate also.

I don't know if mine is completely defective bolts or what, this isn't rocket science and not my first AiO, I have had open loops also, and probably a dozen different random HSF setups.

Here is what the mounting hardware looks like.

Top left is the backplate and the 4 corners there slide back and forth depending on which socket you have.

Fairly center is the standoffs you use for the Intel socket that I have. The ones with the short stubby ends are the other socket that I forget which has a metal plate around it already so no backplate necessary. Then of course the nuts that secure it is right above.

I sent a message to NZXT and they are already sending me a full new mounting kit for free which is nice. Going to take 5 days plus or minus 2 days. I submitted for a return/replace with Amazon also and I will just pull the mounting kit from that in the meantime to try and get online faster, it should be here tomorrow or the next day.

Strange - I didn't have any issues installing mine. I do remember I had to double check to make sure I had the back-plate flipped the correct way but other than that I didn't have a problem with installation.

I got the replacement hardware last night and it was installed within five minutes and not a single issue.

I must have just gotten some badly threaded standoffs.

I just plugged the old boot drive into the new motherboard windows 10 recognized it and installed some things then booted fine. I validated with my windows 7 key.

So, assemble new computer, boot up with both drives installed and powered up, windows 10 asks for your windows 7 key, does some shit and then...? I mean, I guess I could leave my old SSD in, but I believe it's SATA2 and my new SSD is 4x the size, so I'd prefer my OS and games be on the new drive.

You can copy it over but windows 10 can boot without reinstalling if you don't want to. I ignored the key thing until I was sure it would work then went into system about and entered the key there and it validated.

So, I went a different route. Mainly, because this looked like it would work and I'm cheap as fuck to pay for even a $10 key. Ok, maybe not $10, I didn't see that post until just now.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change

If you link your legit license to a microsoft account, when you reinstall or change your hardware, you can use that microsoft account to reactivate windows. So it's almost like you have a floating license.
