This starts tonight on PBS from the same guy that made the excellent Civil War documentary in the 90's.

Everyone loses.

As a Gen-X'er whose Baby-boomer parents/extended family made an active point of NOT talking about Vietnam this is very fascinating. The fascinating history that sets up the whole situation was completely new to me, but really any specifics were completely lacking in my experience to date.

I've never seen anything done by Ken Burns that isn't worth watching. Really looking forward to this.

Never seen a better doc than his Civil War series. I rewatch it every few years.

The new Vietnam War series is currently airing. You can also discuss The War here, The Civil War, The West and all other documentaries by Ken Burns.

I really enjoyed the Roosevelt's documentary he did. I am going to watch this. On Maddog last night they had callers talking about their experiences with Vietnam. Stuff like being kids and seeing their dad come home from the war in his uniform and seeing people spit on his father at the airport. It was touching.

I've been watching parts of these and so far what I've seen it very well done. I do agree that overall it's very sad and depressing. There certainly was a ton a blame to go around and that includes Kennedy.

Eh, i felt us being in vietnam was more of our reluctance to confront the spread of communism earlier in china, and having a ohshit moment after the rapid spread into laos, cambodia, vietnam. We left an awful lot of montagnards high and fucking dry.

They're not pretty stories, personal accounts and lots of footage dug up from research.

I'm on episode 3 right now. It's amazing looking at France's history in Vietnam before us, much like Russia in Afghanistan. We are so arrogant about our belief that we can do what others have failed at when it comes to imperialism.
