Honestly, if you require horsepower for those apps, you may be better getting a true quad core machine with a dedicated GPU. These ultra mobile processors are all dual core and hyperthreaded. The main difference is L3 cache amounts and clock speed. Any rendering or cpu intensive tasks are gonna suck.
Yeah, true. But I do have the power on my PC, it just came down to mobility vs a cintiq. I only found one video regarding 4k editing, and it boggled both i5/i7.. but I'm not really doing anything 4k. I guess at a certain point, since i'm not an industry professional.. it really comes down to the same philosophy as a camera; its the photographer, not the camera.

If your laptop supports a 2.5 inch drive, an SSD will fit. The question is what type of SATA port is on the other end of the connection. If it's not SATA 6gbps, your not gonna see much speed increase.

That's a good point. I'll search around to see if I can figure that out.

I'll see if I can find my old spec sheet and see what it says. Has a wd black 750gb mechanical drive in there right now. Also wanna double check on hard drive slots. Be nice to fit 2 into the machine.

Edit: Found it...

Primary Hard Drive 750GB 7200RPM [SATA II - 16MB Cache] (SKU - HDD099)
mSATA SSD Drive ( Slot 2 ) NO mSATA Solid State Drive
mSATA SSD Drive ( Slot 1 ) NO mSATA Solid State Drive

So apparently there's 2 other sata slots somewhere. Gotta find it!

Also, does this mean I can upgrade my video card?

Graphics Video Card - AMD® Radeon™ HD 8970M (4.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11 [User Upgradeable ] (SKU – GPU003)

My neighbor is looking for a gaming laptop that's +/- $1,000. I'm guessing we'll be playing some Warhammer: Total War together and Divinity: Original Sin. Stuff like that.

I've looked at a few he's found on Amazon, but feel like there's better out there.

Any ideas/suggestions?

For 1000 you are not going to get anything amazing from a laptop, but you should probably still be able to get (or upgrade to after) an SSD and a 1060 mobility version. If you want the 'real shit' you're going to still have to go up to like $2000+ to get the ones that sound like an aircraft carrier and use desktop I7s and stuff like that.

Yeah, that's what I've seen. He's found a few with a 1060 and an SSD, but it seems to sacrifice on RAM and the size of the SSD.

Well RAM is probably the easiest thing to upgrade. SSD is doable but then you have to reinstall windows and that could be a pain.

Personally I would get something with a decent SSD and the 1060 and then buy the ram I think.

Few years back I got a gaming laptop from xoticpc.com and 3 years later its still going strong. Just upgraded it to a ssd and it's so tits now. Might be able to customize something off there that is in his budget.

Thanks for the feedback. He might've actually been looking at the Dell 7577 already and I passed along that site. They have some good deals on there!

That is the cheapest laptop I’ve seen with a 1060 fwiw.
