The FCC is expected to announce a vote to gut net neutrality rules the day before Thanksgiving.

Totally stole, per word from reddit. Fuck Ajit Pai. You know Verizon has a fat ass bonus for him when he steps down from his position.

Hey everyone, the chairman of the FCC, is very likely to announce a vote to gut neutrality, possibly as soon as Nov. 22nd. Once a vote is called, it will become much, much harder to stop ISPs from charging us all extra fees to access streaming services or watch music videos -- and they can demand payment from independent artists and labels, stifling independent voices

But there’s still hope. The most effective way to can stop this is by driving as many calls as possible to our Senators and Representatives, now through Nov. 22nd.

We're getting word that there are lawmakers who are sympathetic to our cause and considering taking action to slow the FCC down, but they won’t act unless they get more phone calls from constituents. Also, if your think your Rep's opposed to net neutrality, its all the more reason to call them. Those Reps need to hear your voice more than anyone.

Please, head over to https://www.battleforthenet.com , and give your Senators and Reps a call telling them to stop the FCC from slashing Title II net neutrality protections. The time to act is now.

To reach the call in line directly by phone, call 202-930-8550.

When you get through to your Rep's office, introduce yourself, be polite, and say:

I support "Title Two" net neutrality rules and I urge you to oppose the FCC's plan to repeal them. Specifically, I'd like you to contact the FCC Chairman and demand he abandon his current plan.

We also have ready-made banners, modals, and graphics of various sizes here: https://www.battleforthenet.com/#join

Thanks.

So what does this mean for torrent traffic?

Does this give them the right to deny it outright?

Charge special fees for certain types of traffic?

We've had rumors of ISPs throttling torrent traffic for a decade now but no evidence AFAIK

Charge fees/throttle it at their leisure.

They can charge/throttle video streaming, they can identify FPS and other gaming traffic and shake down the companies unless they pay to keep it from being slowed down.

This also makes it insanely complicated for backbone service providers since they're expected to maintain a certain level of service but when traffic is routed through 5 networks and the ISP two hops down decides to dick over some services are they supposed to go to the one in the middle and complain? Their customers are still going to be holding up their SLAs saying their needs aren't being met.

I'd wonder if outright denial of a specific traffic type (since it's a "communication") and not only not offering but going out of your way to restrict it, is protected by the 1st amendment.

I guess throttling and setting cost barriers isn't a denial so this won't be a 1st amendment deal at any point

Tldr; it's terrible

No need to deny it. Just make it so painfully slow to use that you might as well not bother. Then it is not them denying you anything, it is because of the system!11!! Despite the fact that it worked fine before they decided to milk the half-dead, dried up cow for a more drops.

Meh someone will make a VPN around it and only normies will get screwed.

Not if they can throttle all VPN provider traffic. They control the last mile, get your wallet out or play whackamole with shady fly-by-night VPN options.

So I still never delved into this enough to know wtf it means. As someone who just plays games online and watches youtube/anime, do I want net neutrality or don't I?

Also, if someone fucks up my ability to play video games then I might start writing a manifesto...

Where do you live that the market is competitive? Everywhere i've ever lived there has been a grand total of 1 option available for cable/internet.

As if 2 or 3 ISPs is the best competition to give the consumer the best options...

In the dialup era I had 10 companies, 80% of them were indy. Where's the indy providers today? That was options. That was competition.
