That's cool. I should finish up the third book within a week or so and then I"m not sure if I'm going to do the Wax and Wayne books or the Stormlight books.

I made the slog through the Mistborn series last year and thought it was very mediocre - Stormlight is head and shoulders above those books, so if you're enjoying those, even a little bit, you'll probably love the Stormlight stuff. Plus, new one is out in a few months as well

I finally finished :

The series to me peaked after the prior novel. This one was a mumble jargon of nonsense and didn't make me laugh at all. It was painful to force myself to pick it up every time I put it down. First two were top notch humor. Even the third one was sensible chuckles. Sometimes a series is just done.

Are there some good books / series available on Kindle Unlimited? Most of what I see in the sci-fi/fantasy section are "trashy romance" novels (even with non-romance selected).

Maybe not gems but at least less stinky turds from Kindle Unlimited.

Fantasy - Dawn of Wonder by Renshaw and Unsouled from Will Wright (I just started Kings Dark Tidings by Kade, seems ok but too early to tell)
Military SciFi - Terms of Enlistment by Kloos and Undying Mercenary Series by Larson (though later books become increasingly silly)
LitRPG - The Way of the Shaman by Mahanenko , Hero of Thera by Nylund, and The Trapped Mind Project by Chatfield (suspension of disbelief needed)
Urban fantasy - Bill the Vampire by Gualtieri and Dead Man by Finn
Zombie - Dead series by Brown, Zombie Road by Simpson (its a Hell Ya! series but fun) and might try something from Bobby Adair (infact he has a decent scifi series going right now)
Apocalypse - Pandemic by Riddle, might also try something from Bobby Akart or Steven Konkoly

I read the first few Jeff wheeler Muirwood books, and they were some of the worst books I've read. Maybe he gets better, or maybe he has other series' that aren't terrible, but I couldn't make it past those turds

The King Henry Tapes by our very own Nebuchadnezzar (Richard Raley) are on Kindle Unlimited. I highly recommend them if you haven't read them.

I actually just finished the first two books of this recently. My somewhat tongue-in-cheek review :

"The story of Awesome man, who is Awesome at everything, his greatest weaknesses are keeping how Awesome he is on the down-low and fending off all the women who want to have sex with him ( but he is pretty Awesome at that too )."

Rezkin has to be the most mary-sue character I've ever seen in anything, so if that annoys you, avoid. Could do with some better editing, they had quite a lot of word substitution errors, and the plot gets pretty silly by the end of the 2nd book.
As one example, "Your writ of authority from the king doesn't explicitly say that you aren't the king, therefore you ARE the king!" is actually accepted as a reasonable argument

I liked it enough to read the second book though.

Seconded. If you are at all a fan of urban fantasy (like Dresden series), you will enjoy his books.

Also recommend Wil Wight. I enjoy his stuff quite a bit, though the writing of the first series is a bit rough. He had gotten quite a bit better in that area

I read the first book and I agree whole heartedly with your assessment. I did not like the book

Just finished the 3 Bobiverse books (by Dennis E Taylor) that have been previously mentioned in this thread. Overall I really enjoyed them. I would have to say that the first one was my favorite, but I flew threw the second and third as well. The last one is the weakest for me since it ends up dealing with a lot more "personal" stuff, but also jumps around constantly. It wasn't hard to follow at all, but each chapter was only a minute or two of reading, and I guess the main thing that made it slightly weaker for me was that it was where they had to deal with the results of all the exploration they did in the first two books. Looking back, them figuring out how to do all the things they do and finding new systems and such was what really excited me, and the last book didn't really have much of that at all. Still very good, and it was a logical progression of the series, so I'm not dissatisfied. As said, it felt like a wrapping up point, but I'd gladly read more books, particularly ones that dealt with more Bobs expanding throughout the universe. Highly recommended if you like this sort of thing at all. It was really well done with all the Bobs being the same but different, and I never once felt like I had trouble keeping them apart in my mind.

I just finished Kings Dark Tidings and I agree with both of you; I will not be reading the second. Though the writing was pretty smooth, the plot was coherent, with decently good characters, and except for a few perspective changes during chapters I thought the book mechanically was sound. If the main character just wasnt superman and the story adjusted to fit that, it could have been a good book.

It seems that Kindle Unlimited is filed with overpowered main characters and wish fulfillment, but I am still drawn to it thinking the next book is going to be "the one". I admit I have a problem.

I'm still going through Jeff Wheeler's stuff. I've read the 2 Muirwood trilogies, and I'm like 2/3 of the way through the Kingfountain trilogy. I'm enjoying them. It's definitely written towards a younger audience, and he has a tendency towards very similar characters, but I think they hold up enough. He takes a lot of influence and inspiration from history and religion/myth.

His magic makes me miss Sanderson though. Sandersons magic systems are just so strong, and so well explained. No one else comes close. It's a shame really

Just finished the Broken Earth series by Jenison. Really fucking good. Mixed sci fi and fantasy elements and great characters. It's even being adapted for tv supposedly, but by TNT so, sad trombone.

I'm really digging Eric Larson's books. I'm just finishing " The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America." Pretty great story about the Chicago world fair. Check out all his books, the one on the sinking of the Lusitania is awesome, too. This dude does an amazing job of researching history and making great narratives on that history.

In the garden of beasts was also excellent. Enjoyed Devil in the white City the most though. Great writer
