I enjoyed the movie. It was certainly longer than the others and had quite a bit more actual plotline / character development within it as a result.

To be honest it felt like a 4-5 episode sequence from Clone Wars or Rebels in that there were several thematic movements in the whole movie which could have been an independent episode in a longer format series.

I like that it served to call out the Jedi and the Sith on their collective bullshit. Rose was a great addition to the new heroes and we got thing like data spikes and slicers added solidly into the canon of the series.

I enjoyed it immensely, but I am the kind of nerd that is gonna enjoy anything that has a) lightsabers and b) not Hayden Christiansen.

My thoughts:

This felt like 3 different movies in one, he really tried to do too much here.

How could they fuck up Phasma again in like exactly the same way?

Rey's 'please stick your xwing in my cockpit' glance at Poe Dameron at the end, come on man. I really liked Rey throughout, and Adam Driver also did a pretty good job most of the way through in my opinion, but that forced little Princess + Hotshot moment at the end stuck in my craw for some reason.

Most of the humor was REALLY cringey/ forced. Really the only humor that worked came from Luke.

The whole casino adventure, that was not necessary.

Some of the callbacks were spot on. My favorite moment was Luke telling Kylo Ren, 'see you around, kid.' You know that had to sting.

There was alot to like if you are a Star Wars fan, but it certainly has plenty of flaws. I'll probably go again in a few weeks, I should not have been able to see it tonight, I was late and without tickets, I just kind of showed up for the 7pm show and hoped my podunk theater in a dying mall would not be sold out. Alas, I was wrong and it was sold out. But through a miracle of the Force, they opened a second screen right as I walked up to the counter, and I walked in past the huge line of people waiting for the sold out show. That was kind of funny. Also all the girls working the theater were dressed up like Rey and I have to admit I might have Roy Moored for a few minutes.

I enjoyed it a ton - missed the first 5 min or so due to a bit of vomiting I had shortly before our showtime that I needed to change out of clothes for though. (Dinner didn't sit well with me I guess, never came back during the showing)

And I agree with Falt's spoilered but doesn't need to be spoilered comment (although other things in it do need to be - so don't click on it unwarned!) - while it made a good movie, it really felt like there was a bit "too much" going on almost like they spliced multiple films into a single one. It worked, but at the same time if there is a director's cut that fully expands on each scene to make each 100% fully explained/covered it'll probably be a 4-5 hr director's cut - SO much going on that could use extra exposition.

I'm not spoiler tagging shit. Clearly no one should be reading this thread if they haven't seen the movie! I liked it, but absolutely did not love it. I don't think it's any better than Justice League to be fair. My criticisms:

Rey - in TFA, she was spritely, cute, and full of life and energy. In this, she looked older, slightly chubby in some scenes, and was a bore. Are they fucking with us about her parents, or did we really all get it wrong with 2 years of theories?

Luke - Funny, but his character was worthless. Basically the entire interaction with him and Rey was pointless, and only Yoda convinced him. His part when he showed up at the end was great though. I thought he died in blast when they shot every gun at him, and then he force ghosted. I didn't think he would be at the island doing all that.

Leia - Oh my god, the fucking death scene, followed by her waking back up and flying back into the ship, go fuck yourself whatever idiot thought of that. Oh my god, it was so fucking cringe.

Rey/Kylo telecommunication - cringe

Everything at the casino/race horses - terrible, cut it out

Fat asian girl - sucked

Fat asian girl/BB-8/etc riding on the robot walker thing - oh my god is this The Hobbit?

---

I really feel like TFA was an insanely good, fast paced, action packed, fun movie. This one totally missed the mark to me. Maybe on second viewing it will improve.

Edit: i put spoiler tags because people complained, its no skin off OPs nose and it keeps everyone happy --Araysar

The problem is not being new, the problem is this new stuff is poorly done and tries to copy other styles, rather than just being SW.
I'm avoiding spoilers for now but I'll go back & check out what you said. Fuckin' curious to see what everybody's sayin'
Yeah, I'm not buying that as the overriding reason. I know some people get off on peering for SJWs, studio shills and MSM hacks hiding under every facet of our culture these days, but that shit gets overblown way too frequently. I'll count it as a contributing factor, but I wonder how much of the negativity is just nerd rage versus legitimate critiques. It would be really interesting to see how people would have initially reacted to ESB if the internet and social media was as prevalent 37 years ago.

I imagine if a benevolent alien race was giving consideration to making contact with us, it wouldn't take more than 10 minutes of them reading an average Facebook feed to peace the FUCK out.
Don't care about shilling & whatever nonsense. Personally I've always gone for public opinion, with exceptions, in place of more professional ones in the same way that if a buddy of mine tells me xyz is good, I'll take that over Roger Ebert & whoever saying it sucks.
While I agree its a little early for a complete Star Wars facelift....let's STOP and remember that George gave it a facelift with the release of the prequels.

This included added technology, special effects, CGI, and new camera work that wasn't possible with 1970s production techniques.

The prequels for all of their faults were still Star Wars and loved by many who weren't choking on hipster elitist dick over at RLM. I'd need to hear what these hypercritical people think of the prequels versus the TLJ production in order to rate their reactions.

TLJ seems to be doing similar stuff as the prequels-- i.e. a facelift.

What is the difference?
The simple fact is the prequels are mediocre films, not terrible ones. Certain aspects are deeply flawed such as dialogue, while others such as visual effects & CGI raised the bar for motion pictures. The problem is they didn't raise the bar for storytelling & the sci fi genre too. They fell short of expectations, they redefined nothing and tarnished the Star Wars name to boot. Part of what could happen when you demystify a thing by bringing it back, or haphazardly fill in a mystery that was better left to the imagination. The prequels should have been much better films.

We'll see about The Last Jedi soon enough.

Just sat down in my reserved recliner, life is good. I am a Star Wars Fanboi so it will take prequel levels of bad to disappoint me. As long as it is on par with Ep 7 I will be happy. Will be back in 2.5 hours to give a thumbs up or down.

I really liked the movie. However, I would have like to have seen the "could have beens" but we got the story we got and i'm happy with it.

What I liked:
I thought Yoda was the best part of the night. Was good to see him in OT form and be a part of the equation.
I like what Mark Hamil did even if it wasn't maybe what we wanted or even he wanted. He played his role prefect. If you didn't like Luke, it's the writers fault, not his...
I liked the passing of the torch moments. I was very glad Poe is becoming a bigger part. Carrie Fisher did very well in her parts and felt as if she was handing out the parts to the respective new characters.
They covered a lot of ground. I actually glad that they answered all the obvious questions. We knew who was going to die ultimately. Maybe not how but now i'm not sure where they go.

What I didn't like:
Phasma... geez that just sucked. The elevator save was stupid and her death was stupid. She could have been used so much better.
Overuse of humor but it wasn't near as bad as I thought
I think the middle part, plan > casino > infiltration, felt a little rushed and disconnected and they turned through the pages really quick but given the runtime I guess they had to.
Mary Poppins thing was pretty dumb. I'm cool with Leia using the force to live and saving herself but that didn't feel right to me.

On the fence:
I'm warming up to the Finn and Rose arc. I liked Rose's character but I just don't like Finn. His portrayal of the character just seems out of place to me and did in TFA as well.
Snoke's death. I liked how Rey saw a future and so did Snoke and while they were accurate they were misinterpreted. Yoda warned Anakin about looking at the future. It just didn't feel right. Maybe we built Snoke up in our minds being all these different things.. the Prime Jedi, Darth <pick a name>, etc.

Now what:
So, what happens now? It's obvious Hux is not quite on board. Curious if there's a greater evil that will move in on Kylo? He doesn't seem like the ultimate villain to me.
I'm assuming Luke isn't totally done? Guess his force ghost will be around.
I can see that Leia probably had a big role in 9. I could have seen Rey and Kylo in a final match and Leia stopping Kylo from the final blow or something to that end. Now they're in bind with Carrie Fisher's death. Maybe they use her daughter?
Can't see the end which going to be interesting but leaves all this open for some real deflation. This moving stole a lot of thunder. Snoke's dead, Luke's a ghost, Rey vs. Kylo has only obvious endings so i'm more concerned about 9 than having any problems with 8.

I think this is easily and 8.5+ / 10. While it's a solid movie, great characters, and a lot of actions and surprises you had some forced, overused humor, Phasma, and Mary Poppins. The negatives are brief and easy to overlook. Much more good than bad. Hardly a dull moment and characters go a lot of different directions. All the pressure is on episode 9 so sit back and enjoy this one. It's a fun ride.

Just got back from back to back The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, first time I rewatched TFA since in theaters and I understand why people bag on it now, it doesn't really hold up that well on rewatches. Wanna avoid rating TLJ too much until I watch it 1-2 more times but first impressions are super positive, having rewatched EVERY single star wars movies over the past week, including the Holiday Special, right now TLJ is far ahead of everything including even ESB but maybe on a second and third rewatch it'll drop a bit.

Lot of people cosplaying at my theater, was pretty cool to see all the vaders, Luke's, Kylo, etc. Really amazing jobs too by everyone.

We had a couple cloaks and lightsabers, not too many cosplayers - but the 3D theater (we were seeing 2D though) was made up like the Hoth base for the hallway leading to the theater - no idea if they did anything more inside as well, definitely going to try to take a peak when we go back for a Moviepass 2nd viewing. (We paid cash to avoid risking missing the planned time we wanted - weren't sure if our theater would fill - nothing else opening day fills here, but TLJ did - with us being ~20 min late, 5 min or so into the movie, we actually had ZERO choice for seats lol - only 2 seats open in the whole theater)

7/10. I think. The funny thing is, I really enjoyed all the "new" characters from TFA, Rey and Kylo, Finn, Poe, etc. The plot just drove me crazy.

Honestly the thing that is driving me crazy is the lazy fucking writing. Way too much forced humor in the movie, but I could even live with that if not for the lazy writing shit. Even shit like "they can track us through hyperspace" would be absolutely fine. But essentially only having 3 plot points: Luke/Rey on the island, Finn/Rose off on their bullshit trip (that literally turned into a huge nothingburger), and "The Chase"...the ridiculous shit of the Imperial fleet "trapping" the running out of fuel Resistance which is literally down to only 3 fucking ships.

Finn/Rose shit would work waaaaay better if he isn't on the ship to begin with, but at some other medical facility elsewhere of the Resistance, which then gets the message about them being tracked...he knows he's the only one who can get to where it is, and he would take off separately (even with a Rose character in tow) to find a way past First Order defenses would be far better than the whole Poe is literally disobeying orders the entire fucking movie sending them off secretly. I didn't mind Rose, I thought she and Finn did a good enough job with their roles, the writing for it and the whole "casino planet" visit was just stupid. It's a Star Wars movie, and all we got other than "The Chase" scene was 3 planet visits, one which was at the start you never even really know what/where it is, 2 the casino planet which was basically just fluff and "Benicio Del Toro for no real reason", and the salt flat planet to redo the Hoth battle scene.

Luke...as someone noted above, he did everything he could with the role that was written for him, and did come off as a badass at the end, even if that Matrix dodge was just way too much. The whole hiding on an island to die shit was weak, we barely got much of an explanation to what happened with the Temple and Ben's training other than "I sensed darkness and one night went to see what the fuck was up...and shit went down"". We get a glimpse of some ancient teachings about the Jedi and talk about The Balance that ends up a big nothing burger so Yoda's force ghost could have a bit of humor (completely unnecessary). Yodi's force ghost should have been completely serious scene with Luke. If you go back to his talk with Kenobi in Jedi/Empire, there was no humor to it. I'd lay big odds he returns as a force ghost in Episode 9, but killing him off (probably) after making him be a pussy for most of the movie just doesn't sit well. Han had a good final movie where he was actually himself, and with a meaningful death, but Luke IS Star Wars. While I'm glad he got his moment in the end, how he was written was terrible imo. Although frankly the idea of being able to project yourself that far across the galaxy came across as OP/crazy as Leia saving herself from being blown out of the command ship.

The effects were pretty fucking good. I will say when Laura Dern's character sent the ship to lightspeed into the fleet that looked amazing and the total silence in that moment was absolutely perfectly done. Loved the space battle at the beginning, even if it's weird their bomber "fleet" was all of like 10 ships or less, and that Poe can literally take out every turbolaser on a capital ship by himself.

Thought Rey and Kylo played their characters extremely well. I enjoyed Finn/Rose/Poe as well, I just hated how the plot was written for everything that happened. Didn't mind the Snoke death scene at all, thought it was clever how Kylo played it...dumb as fuck that Snoke is just a random that his apprentice kills though, with no other backstory. Similar to how we seem to get tricked by trailers into believing there is more to why Luke is off by himself and more to why the Jedi need to end and the Force in general from trailers...but all just big nothing burgers in the end.

Literally don't mind starting point A to end point E...it's the B/C/D of how they got there I thought was just poorly written and conceived. Let Timothy Zahn write the damn scripts for this shit, so we can get real plot and not Finn/Rose running all over the place just so he can have a fight with Phasma after every troop that had them completely at their mercy is dead/disoriented from Laura Dern going to hyperspace through the ship while Finn/Rose/BB8 are miraculously all good and ready to make a run for it.

Man that comes off bitter, I did enjoy the movie for what it was, just thought too much of the plot was just silly. Actors/characters I actually think did the best with what they had to work with...I just think the plot was lazy and could have been much better. I do think it's in a good spot where they can have a good Episode 9...the end point was fine, just didn't really make sense how they got there.

Planet Las Vegas was pure aids. That entire scene was more painful than the pod race. By a long shot.

well the reason the movie resonates really high for me right now is just because it did a lot of things i didn't expect

leia gets thrown into space, "oh, they are killing her off to make it easier for 9, makes sense thats a bummer wait wtf is she doing how is she alive wtf??"
shit they killed everyone in the rebellion and Laura Dern is a shitty pansy admiral oh wait she has fucking balls of steel damn
I expected snoke to be another standard tropey movie villain who gets built up in this movie and taken down in the next one, but nope he gets 5 mins of screen time and is DONE. whoah.
Luke just saying "fuck all this shit" threw me for a loop, plus his rejection of the Jedi ideas.
Luke admitting he sorta created Kylo Ren threw me for a loop.
Luke force projecting himself to fight Kylo was a great twist for me.

The only things that really didn't work for me was Benicia's character / Planet Vegas and Phasma. I also wished they had delved deeper into the lore of the Jedi Temple and Ren's parentage threw me off since the video game goes in a very different direction.

So yeah, maybe just having a whole bunch of twists that I did NOT see coming isn't a great reason to uprate the movie but for me shocks and twists in a movie are rare and awesome and I felt like I really wasn't sure where the movie was going a lot of times. Could be on a second and third viewing I'll see the same flaws you guys do but I enjoyed the comedic bits.

lol its cool bro. It's just funny because I usually agree with you 99.9% of the time on about everything. Oh well maybe I am being a teeny bit too harsh but I can't get past a few scenes like....

The god damn soccerball droid????? Holy fuck Move over T-1000 just get Skynet to send that fucking thing back in time and we're toast. It literally wiped out a squad of Phasma's bodyguards and all those police and all sorts of crazy shit. WTF I mean dude I literally Picarded in the fucking theater and mouthed " why."

Ok, so in TFA, there's a whole thing on how Luke's lightsaber is calling to Rey, and how Maz (the little old lady thing) kinda knows about Rey, etc. And it's all for nothing. This movie tells us she's literally just an abandoned orphan who happens to be extremely force sensitive.

Some of the twists were okay. Kylo/Rey sorta working together, but Kylo still just being evil I liked. Snoke...maybe we built him up too much to be some Big Bad Force User that a lot of us wanted to have a cool backstory. Luke "admitting" he created Kylo was okay, I thought they did that part well having it told from his and Kylo's point of view...and how those two were not the same at all was actually decently done. The actual ACT of Laura Dern jumping to lightspeed into First Order Fleet was great...how her character got there was just silly with the whole don't tell Poe shit so he commits mutiny/treason for the 3rd time in 2 hours was just stupid

I am so disappointed right now. This movie was almost prequel bad. I just can't believe the choices they made and how disjointed the first 30-40 minutes were.

Off the top of my head here are my biggest issues or at least the ones that made me groan...
  • There is no gravity in space, how the fuck did those bombs fall on the Dreadnaught?
  • Leia flying through space
  • Luke milking that Sea Cow Thing
  • Luke Spear Fishing
  • Chewie was just a throw away character
  • Benicio's characters speech tick
  • Why was Phasma even in this movie?
  • Yoda Force Ghost lightning???
  • The whole Speed Theme with the ships running out of fuel.
  • Poe showing zero remorse for getting all the Bomber Pilots killed
  • Poe's whole character
  • The reveal about Rey's Parents felt like misdirect and we don't know the real answer yet, either way it was lame
  • Thew lack of Origin Story for Snoke
  • Snoke going out the way he did... more on this below
  • The fight against the Praetorian Guards, let's broth kill 3 of the 4 we are fighting and struggle with the last one... WTF?
  • When did Jedi' become David Copperfields?
  • The HAMFISTED jokes every 5 minutes, less is more. If they cut out 5 or 6 of the jokes it would have been better.
  • Kylo & Rey deciding they had to fight it out with each other rather than talk just a little
  • Rose falling in love with Fin in less than 12 hours.
Overall it feels like whoever wrote this story line just binge watched the first 7 movies for the first time and then sat down and wrote a script, mising all the nuance of what makes Star Wars so cool.

Regarding Snoke, just like the last Dark Side Force Wielder that got cut in half I look forward his triumphant return in the next Disnet XD Star Wars Cartoon Series. I have no doubt that Snoke will WILL himself to live using the his hate only to team up with his long lost brother Supreme Cheeser Poke. We will actually get an Origin Story worthy of the character only to have him die in a similar fashion yet it will be more satisfying. I feel like my childhood truly died tonight...

did the kid pick up the broom w/ the force?

Also, Charlie's breakdown.

Enjoyed the movie. Stupid stuff bugged me, like how someone would take two steps backwards and then the camera switches sides and they're 15 feet apart.
