Loved it.

Much better than Ep7.
3rd best in the series (ANH -> ESB -> TLJ)

----
No spoilers:

This was a Star Wars movie through and through. It had the goofiness you would see in the originals that never seemed to make sense, but was just there, making the Galaxy feel more "real". Loved it. Anyone thinking the jokes/silliness is a negative is not a true Star Wars fan. Watch the originals again.

It had the intimate storyline. This movie was about the characters. It wasn't about showcasing 50 different planets and a massive CGI budget, it was about honing in on the characters and telling their stories.

You need to watch the originals again. The goofy humor wasn't nearly as prevalent as it was in TLJ. No one was "trolling" Tarkin over the comm to undermine his character from the jump. Original didn't showcase anywhere near 50 planets. A New Hope had Tatooine and Yavin 4. Can count the Death Star as well as a "location". Empire had Hoth, Dagobah, and Bespin. Jedi was basically just Tatooine again, and Endor, with a slight side trip back to Dagobah. But you actually got a sense of the locations, while developing the characters.

Because there is a rule about using spoiler tags for a week or so after a film comes out. I am here to see if its worth rushing out this weekend

Actually I wasn't saying the Originals did it wrong, either, they were narrow in scope too, as you mention, and I like that, but the prequels and even TFA I thought focused more on locations and big CGI sets. Like Starkiller destroying 10 planets at once and shit. I liked the more intimate setting of this one more.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect MOST people to spoiler for a week or so at least. (a la GoT thread)

Not that I'd critique those that slip either, however. (But I'm biased having already seen it minus first minutes)
Thought the new GoT rule was spoilers were fine once the episode aired? I get most people are seeing this tonight/this weekend, so spoilers for another day or so seem fine by me.

The intimate setting of 90% of the movie is a single island and the insides of a couple ships playing out a completely ridiculous version of Speed...I guess to each their own. Prequels didn't really jump around that much either, as most of each one was plot lines back on Coruscant, with focus on one or two other planets (Naboo, Tatooine, Geonosis, Mustafar). Other than those, at best you got one off shots of Jedi on other planets getting killed off as part of Order 66. TFA and R1 I can agree seemed to jump around a bit more, although even TFA you're down to not very many planets. All that said...I think most Star Wars fans LIKE getting a real sense of locales and planets within the SW galaxy. It's funny you bring up CGI because the only real "qualities" of each planet visited in TLJ are basically CGI creatures that are on each. Caretakers on Luke's island, big time gambler aliens in the casino along with big dogs they ride, and crystal fox things on salt planet. Other than that they're all pretty much throwaway spots other than ancient Jedi temple on Luke's island.

I have never rolled my eyes so much in a Star Wars movie before, not even in the prequels. It's not as bad as the prequels but it's definitely on par in cringeyness.

4/10.

No idea if it changed, I only dipped in that thread rarely. I was referring to the one in the past if it updated.

Is it really so difficult to imagine people having different taste in movies from yourself and that such a difference doesn't make their tastes either objectively good or bad and vice versa, just different? We all go into these movies with a different set of check boxes that determines how well we will end up liking them on the other side. And for some that list evolves over time.

If the only people you've seen reacting positively to this one are young girls and critics you regard as little more than shills then just maybe you've only been paying attention to an extremely narrow subset of people who've seen it. The passionate responses both good and bad are plentiful on all fronts.

One week for movies, 24 hours for tv and/or before an episode airs in spoilers, after it airs fair game.

It's a matter of not being a dickhead. It also requires no effort on your part to use spoiler tags.

If you are going to say anything that might remotely spoil other people w/ specifics, use the tag. Plain and simple.

Is the "goofy humor" what made you guys hate this movie so much, or something else? Because look back at the originals and it was goofiness from act 1.

R2 & C3PO are a running gag
Silly creatures everywhere
Han making cheesy jokes all the time
Stormtroopers running around the Deathstar comicly
Eyeball monster in the garbage schute

and this isn't counting the stuff added later, like Jabba's tail getting stepped on or the musical in Jabba's lair.

Porgs in this movie were fine. The joke in the beginning was inline with some things Han would say. Han had that cocky attitude toward the Empire. Didn't they pull off some similar stunts with the intercoms? Not as blatant for sure, but similar, and yea, it drives the point that Hux is a damn moron. Is he really supposed to be a badass? He's an imbecile.

I think you guys are getting too old to enjoy these movies anymore.

Everyone watches GOT on the same day, a day later for non US audiences (although torrents are available earlier)

Everyone doesn't go the cinema at the same time

I was clarifying the rule that someone else brought up. I wasn't using GoT as an argument for anything. I don't know why you guys continue to harp on this. I only mentioned GoT cause someone brought it up thinking it was a week or whatever.

As the day goes on and I talk to more people about the film I find myself liking it more and more, even when talking to a close friend who loathed it. Even with other movies that there was a division of opinion it is usually :

"I liked it because X"
"Really? I hated it because Y"
"Eh I can maybe see your point, but I feel X >> Y"

For this movie both the people who like it and the people who hate it are doing so for the same reason. When comparing notes with my buddy we were talking about the exact same parts of the movie and I was arguing how that was good and he was arguing about how that was bad and we were completely unable to come to any sense of mutual understanding.

I think we've become too sophisticated for Star Wars. I don't think Mel Brooks could even liven this bunch up.

I think it's believable that the lightsaber did connect with Luke in a manner similar to Vader & Obi Wan, even if it was from such a great distance.
It would have been believable if Luke hadn't just survived an absolute bombardment from the entirety of the First Order.

Yeah if only Mel Brooks had
The wonderfully done prank calling starships scene
for comic relief Blazing Saddles would have been good.

R2 and 3PO are pretty much the humor. Han's character is pretty much built on that, but he's not in this movie. Eyeball monster was still an actual mortal threat, weird as it was.

Point is it still fit in with the story. 3PO whining was literally his character, so that was fine, same with Han being a sarcastic jackass. Poe trolling the commander of the First Order's Army to make him seem like a bitch from the very start of the movie is just silly as shit. It also makes the character come off as completely inept and non-threatening. It was nothing like Han's humor, he never interacted with higher ups like that. You never saw him shit talking Vader that way. You never saw that with Tarkin, etc. Vader actually killed admiral/generals that fucked up by crushing their windpipe with the force, whereas Kylo just threatens, and like 5 separate times in the movie we get the "right away sir" after he gets angry.

Porgs weren't really that big of a deal. Could have done with a little less from them, but it wasn't nearly as stupid as Yoda giggling at Luke in what should be a really serious moment convincing Luke that he shouldn't be questioning everything about the Force and teaching more Jedi. It wasn't so much the humor in general, just too much of it, and it ruined scenes and characters by making them a joke instead of serious/threatening. Hux is supposed to at least appear ruthless and evil, not Moe who Bart prank calls again every fleet engagement.

Couple all that in with terrible Speed dilemma facing "the last 3 ships" of the entire Resistance...Poe disobeying orders 3 or 4 separate times and heading a mutiny. Hell even when Poe "learns" that he needs to be a leader and not just sacrifice people for the sake of sacrificing them...Finn just turns into mini Poe and is like "nope, fuck it, I'm gonna ram it". Someone else in the thread made a good point about how the First Order seemingly has The Big Gun for every situation now, but couldn't beat this tiny Resistance that was down to 3 almost out of fuel ships. I just feel like any decent writer could have come up with a plot that got the characters through their key moments and from start to finish in a hell of a lot better way than what we got

What I don't understand is this;

They say the cruisers are to far away to shoot effectively, but have no issues smoking multiple transports even further away. Why the fuck they not just do that to the cruisers?

That is true, the original trilogy and TFA are full of quips and gags. Don't mind TLJ's humor. Besides, the prequels took themselves too seriously. Maybe it's more the style which is alike Marvel's. Can get boring.
