She is surprised to learn that it’s not a raiding party, but an actual party, with caretakers celebrating and swinging glow sticks. This piece of concept art from The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi shows what the scene looks like. The caretakers all stop and look at Rey, confused. One of the caretaker motions her her glow stick and Rey swings her lightsaber, imitating her movements, and sighs. The caretakers resume partying. Rey spots Chewbacca sitting at the party with a bunch of Porgs and R2-D2 (wearing a festive necklace). “Seriously?” Rey says to Chewie before storming out to find Luke.

...as if I needed to know any more about how much of a joke they were trying to make this movie.

I don't think it's a new idea and I am sure it's been used in EU and other maybe still canon stuff. Vader threw his Saber at Luke and it stayed on- that fighting game u did the same etc.

I understand the comparison but I feel like TLJ completely failed even there - the audience had lots of specific questions after TFA that TLJ did not answer. Not only didn't answer, but specifically ignored or just said "Now it doesn't matter what the answer was, move along!". So we have basically no answers for the questions from TFA and the only things that really remain are traces of those same questions. That's pretty weak story telling. I'm all for show and don't tell but they're not even trying to show, either. Where did the First Order come from and why are they basically just the Empire, using Empire troops and ships and infrastructure and crazy doom-weapon nonsense? Who, and what, is Snoke? Oh, now I guess it doesn't matter. Is there no actual line of power succession? Why, if the dark side users don't have to be Sith, do the light side still have to be Jedi? Why was Admiral PurpleHair so goddamn slow to move her ship to either intercept those shots or y'know, do the crazy thing there's no precedence for because now it opens up a huge can of weaponized worms?

No sequel is going to address every single one of the potential questions that arise out of it's predecessor. Especially in Star Wars where you have detail obsessed fans pouring over minutiae wondering about things that really aren't all that relevant to the narrative regardless of how interesting the answers may be. If they even attempted it you'd end up with a four hour movie, half of it spent trying to come up with creative ways of delivering exposition. For some of those questions you're listing as examples if you're the type of fan who is that interested in the setting then you're probably reading the expanded materials and will find out the answers. Because that's why those exist, to satisfy you're curiosity without bogging down the movies with continuous info dumps.

Why, if the dark side users don't have to be Sith, do the light side still have to be Jedi? Not only is that a question that very few people are going to be asking, it's based on a false premise. The jedi continuing to exist doesn't mean light side force users have to be a part of them. But there are only two major force users left (that we know of atm) and one of them is following a philosophy of "burn down the past". That he happens to be the dark side force user is why there is no effort being put into resurrecting the Sith.

As for Snoke it's been said several times before and I know for a lot of people it's just not good enough but that fact is his origin, where he came from, what race he is, why he was so powerful, why he was the head of the First Order ... just isn't important to the story at this point. We know the same amount of information about him as we knew about the Emperor when he died at the end of RotJ.

I'm not sure why you'd have been wondering about Admiral PurpleHair and her combat tactics after TFA. She wasn't even in the movie.

See I think you right about the snoke stuff Royal but there was also no lore to go on so not knowing the emperor works in Empire and Return. now we have so much back story that throwing snoke in there with nothing to go on messes up the story. at least that's how I see it.

The only people who are really aware of all that backstory are the more hardcore fans. Not having Snoke more fleshed out within it yet is part of the disconnect between what everyone more or less needs to know and what the core fans want to know. And if you read all of that stuff you know how they deliver it; after the movies come out so as not to put hoops in front of them that they have to jump through to remain consistent to that preexisting information.

Definitely was used in the EU - I didn't read much of any of those books, but in the 1 or 2 I did read, I remember a specific scene with Luke putting his saber into the torpedo/missile bay of his ship, launching it into space, then using the Force to stop it's travel, activate it, and use it to clear away debris from something he was trying to recover in the middle of space.

So would star wars be better served as seasonal content like Netflix or hbo?

There's a place for it (and they're developing a live action show now for Disney's streaming service) but it will probably be set at some point in the past, just like everything else is. And fans are going to have to get used to the differences that the limitations of a smaller budget are going to bring. Even the animated shows like Rebels are creatively constrained by their budget (it's why so many of the episodes are centered around infiltration themes. It allows them to reuse existing models and "sets" to save money). The movies are extremely expensive to make even when measured against other big budget tent poles. A live action show is going to end up fundamentally different from them in many ways.

No, we just need a prequal trilogy that fits between episode 6 and episode 7. A midqual trilogy. Not just for the Snoke back story either. I want to see Han Solo changing Ben's diapers, and I want to see Leia being a helicopter mom during Ben's Jedi training and being an absolutely whiny cunt to Luke until he just can't fucking stand her bitching any more and moves to the far side of the galaxy to get away from her. I want an entire movie full of the Knights of Ren, including the part before they're recruited by Snoke and they're just fucking bored teenagers walking around drawing penises on literally everything and pushing old ladies into puddles and kicking people's six legged space dogs, and just generally being petty dicks for no reason at all. I want to see Fear And Loating on Jakku: A Star Wars Story that tells the tragic tale of Rey's junkie parents.

Yo she sure did. That was straight up boom chicka wow wow, don't come knocking when the Falcon's rocking. I thought the exact same thing, I look forward to the Rey - Hope - Poe - Finn - Kylo love pentacle in Ep 9.

Poe, Finn, and Klyo will get it on, while Rey watches on from the side with great frustration.

Knights of Ren series would be the best idea - as it could...if done right, redeem a lot of TLJ issues.

Such as...

Why Luke was willing to straight up murder Kylo

Who the hell Snoke is

How the first order gained power

Luke pretty much explained the situation with Kylo from his perspective. He said he saw the darkness in him and how willfully he embraced it shocked him. Knowing the evil things he would do his immediate impulse was to go ahead and end him before he could do them (kinda like the Hitler in his crib scenario). But it was just a passing impulse that he pulled away from before he could act on it but not before Kylo became aware of what he been about to do.

A lot of the foundational history of the First Order is covered in the novels. The Aftermath series and Bloodline. And the way they manage canon makes doing adaptations very difficult. But there is a big chunk of their re-organization and build up in the Unknown Regions that hasn't been delved into yet, including how Snoke became involved.

Didn't Luke also say he was shocked at how much Snoke had already influenced Ben? I could have sworn I heard that, but thats a bit weird because that means (1) Luke knew who Snoke was (2) when Luke abandoned the republic he basically was leaving them to Snoke.

He may have. Part of why I want to watch it again is there was some of Luke's dialog that I didn't quite catch the first time.

I was wondering about that also. Did the Jedi in training get a base pass and snoke would meet up with kylo? Why didn't luke go after snoke instead of trying to kill kylo?
