And Kasdan aside, what were the circumstances of Rian Johnson assuming 100% of the writing duty on TLJ? Its a good question that hasn't really been explained. As RLM pointed out, he really is a nobody and probably isn't much of a writer, more of a director. I suppose Royal sort of answered this earlier that there is a committee orientation with regards to creative and Rian writing the whole movie wasn't considered that big of a deal since the committee and all.

I don't want to imply that that's not interesting, or that's not cool, or it doesn't matter. I think, who knows, they might address it in Episode 9. They might address it elsewhere. What I knew was that in this film, similar to with the Emperor in the original trilogy, it's just not what this story is about. And the Emperor in the original trilogy, you know nothing about him. Because you don't have to! It's not what it's about. ... The Emperor is in two [scenes] of the movie, and you know everything that you need to know about him. It's the exact same thing in this trilogy. As opposed to the prequels, where you know everything about him because you need to. Because that's the story.

That makes a lot more sense. Rian had the script done for TLJ before TFA finished principle photography.

So I always say, in any one of the scenes, if Snoke had stopped and done a 30-second monologue about how he's Darth Plagueis, you can see it just would not have ... and I'm NOT saying that he is! [Laughs] You can see how it would have just stopped the scene cold. None of the characters who are interacting with him would have really cared. Rey would have just blanked and said, 'Who?' It really wouldn't have made... it just didn't fit in the linear progress of this story.

Watched Rogue One again and it's so good. like make all the new ones like it please. there's plenty to do. Just look at Clone Wars cartoon.

On a side note, my 4-yo saw A New Hope for the first time and bursted out laughing at the Cantina scene. To him, the Bith had butts for heads...

I have a theory that rogue one is so much better because they are all new characters, I have no preconceived ideas about any of them, I hate tlj but I feel like I might have lkied it more if it was set 100 years after roj and left the original characters in legend.

He really laid out why it was extra retarded for Captain purple hair to not tell Poe anything. This guy is not only their best pilot, this is the guy that blew up the starkiller thing in the last movie and the dreadnaught thing in this one. I can get behind the "You don't have to always blow shit up" lesson, I think it's a solid arc for him, but this was way more contrived to make women be better suited to lead than toxic masculinity.

I still contend that Finn, Poe, Rey and Kylo are all good characters. They just insist on cramming in social justice and diversity hires to send a message, and are dead set on killing off everything people loved about the originals. May as well bring back midichlorians at this point. Yeah fuck the jedi, fuck the religion, good vrs evil? fuck that. It's all midichlorians and jedi privilege. Time to smash the 1% in their casinos and nazi star destroyers.

I don't think anyone is contending otherwise. We just don't believe these are Rian Johnson's characters.

The creator of the NT had no input into Episode 8 per Rian's own words, he was able to cut the creators of the NT out entirely.

These are Kasdan and JJ's characters, and I'd love to see their take on them in the future Episode 8 Special Edition release. That creep can fuck his stubby little fingers off of them.

No. He was only lured back to work on 7 by the promise of getting to do a Solo movie. He's said that will be the last movie he writes. Abrams is writing 9 with Chris Terrio.

Johnson is a writer/director in that he was written everything that he has directed so far. Well movies anyway. He did direct some of the standout episodes of Breaking Bad and he obviously didn't write those. As for why he was chosen it seems that Kathleen Kennedy was enamored with idea of getting lesser known but promising young directors involved in the franchise instead of going with more established names after Abrams did the first movie (he was who her old boss Spielberg was pushing). Because they don't have a dedicated writer for the trilogy movies she's been choosing directors who either write their own stuff or have an established writing partner. Gareth Edwards being the exception. He has a single writing credit but didn't need to write Rogue One since it was the idea of a couple of longtime Lucasfilm guys and they wrote the screenplay.

There's not going to be a director's cut or extended edition. It creates problems with a single, unified canon that is primarily defined by the movies when you have multiple edits of them. I'm sure they don't want to revisit a situation like having to defend the Special Editions as the official versions against those who hate the differences.

so i was watching that RLM video last night and it started me thinking. howd Kylo Ren get Vader's mask? wasnt his funeral pyre smack dab in the middle of the Ewok city in Endor? does that mean KR murdered all the ewoks too?

some of that is fair stuff. but that statement is untrue. You don't need to know anything about the Emperor in the OT because there was no prequel at that time.
THIS trilogy occurs, 30 years after the OT. We do need some context where he came from, and how he was not relevant 30 years prior. Especially when the character is clearly old enough to have been around then.

Rogue one was a war movie. and soaked in lore. I really never understood RLM's "explosions!" "Memberberries!" for it. They were WAY off on its problems. it had many problems, but nostalgia and dumb explosions were not the problems with it.
Hell, look at their review of this movie, and "they are all the same! old wizard, nazis, rebels" again, Rogue 1 did try something different with that mix.

yeah. More on the "how this should have played out"

I was thinking about this last night, and how stupid the slow chase idea was. And especially as noted, with the ships coming and going as they please. That is so retarded.... The First order, would have just let 30 transport ships travel to that planet without noticing them, unless told? what the fuck?

This scenario has been done before. And done 1000X better.... Battlestar Galatica.
Cylon fleet chasing the Galatica across the galaxy. Jump drive. cooldown. Cylons catch up. jump drive. cooldown. Cyclons catch up. repeat.

They should have just ripped that off. the fleet jumps. 30min later. the first order catchs up. wtf?! jump again. 29min later. the first order catchs up.
So begins an epic chase across the galaxy. As the first order catchs up faster and faster. At about 10min delay, they do something to stall the first order from catch up. Double jumps maybe. Which allows the Resistance to drop off people at the casino planet in order to get help, in a sensible way.
And again, the Epic tale of the Resistance fleeing across the galaxy is SEEN by hundreds of worlds, as the fleets hyperspace into orbit of worlds, and fight, and hyperspace away.
Which again, THAT is something a new Resistance can be formed on, as a hundred worlds bare witness to this chase, and massacre.

I am pretty sure this is even something that could have been done in editing, or easy reshoots.

I keep seeing how pissed people are that VICE ADMIRAL holdo wasn't telling a newly demoted CAPTAIN poe the plan. She even reminds him that the last act of HER superior was to demote him. He wasn't even allowed on the bridge most of the time...
