The Best of 2017

I found some of these metrics really interesting. Things like The Witcher 3 still being in the platinum list 2 years in a row is nuts (Top 100)

Really interesting how Warframe was in top grossing game too, shows how much in game stores really generate here.

I think the best thing to ever happen for Warframe was Destiny 2. I heard so much about how Warframe is the game Destiny 2 should have been. I'm a little surprised that Ark is still there, and also (maybe) GTA V.

Just shows to me that 2017 was weak as fuck for PC. Console dominated this year IMO. Although Steam definitely isn't the standard for PC gaming anymore, but still.

PC lives and dies on multiplats, and there wasn't any major multiplats released this year. It still had arguably the largest game of the year (PUBG) run rampant though.

Any year with major AAA multiplats is going to be a dominant PC year.

I can't even think of any major game releases I looked at on steam in 2017

I played Shadow of War, Prey, Destiny 2 and AC:O. I also played some smaller games like Tales of Berseria, Hollow Knight, Nier: Automata, Cuphead and South Park.

I don't think it was a bad year for Steam really, I mean I still played DOTA, XIV and Vermintide which took a lot of time up.

I still haven't played Divinity Original Sin 2. I've been meaning to play it but it's a huge time commitment.

I mourn the loss of the Steam before they opened the floodgates and every asshole with Unity or Ren'Py decided to release a game. Greenlight wasn't perfect, but at least it prevented the site from becoming harder to navigate than a fucking mobile app store.

As for the Best of, I'm glad to see Warframe up there, DE deserves everything they get even if I don't always agree with their design decisions and think one of their dudes in particular is a fucking retard who tries to ruin every system he touches. Even in spite of that the game is still great. I'm also kind of surprised PoE is only in the silver category; maybe GGG should reconsider how much they charge for every little thing in their shop. I've always felt people would be more inclined to spend more on MTX if everything was a hell of a lot cheaper. Anyone who really wants to whale out is just going to do shit like buy a create-a-unique anyway.

I'm old so I miss the days of buying games in boxes and smelling that new-game-box smell of asian cadmium toxicity, along with getting a proper physical manual you could read while taking a shit.

Downloading a game then scrolling through a txt/pdf just isn't the same...

I mean that's pretty much the case for all games now. I barely ever buy physical copies unless I'm after a hard copy of something, it's just way more convenient to go digital.

I barely bought physical copies of PC games anyway, because I'd rather use the extra port for a hard drive over a disk drive.

It's certainly convenient, but it sorta sucks not actually owning the games you buy.

Which should give you an idea of how fucked PC gaming was this year. A buggy "early release" game pretty much shit on everything else.

It shat on everything. No game has come close to the 10m units that PUBG has sold on console or PC.

Yeah that's a pretty weak argument when it sold more than any console game too, so by extension that'd make 2017 a fucked year for consoles too, which is retarded.

There were plenty of good games this year, both on consoles and PC. Maybe not that many PC exclusives, but a lot of the best games this year were also released on PC, which is fine unless you're some weird elitist that can only like games that are exclusive to PC. Divinity 2 is I think the big one this year, with a bunch more being good games like Nier, Hollow Knight, Total Warhammer 2, Tales of Berseria, South Park, Trails of Cold Steel, Danganronpa V3, What Remains of Edith Flinch, Prey, Endless Space 2, Pyre, Hellblade, Wolfenstein 2, HOB, Cuphead, AC: Origins, Nioh, Hand of Fate 2 and Battlerite.

And as usual with PC gaming, the year also had a lot of content for existing games that have more people playing than console games do. Shit like LoL/Dota/CS:GO/Overwatch/PoE have constant updates, FFXIV and GW2 got new expansions, WoW still does what WoW does and the new PUBG/Fortnite are new games that are annihilating numbers from previous games of similar genre.

Divinity 2 was pretty garbage. I mean people are so desperate for, I don't know what we're calling them ARPG or whatever, that they looked past the most cumbersome ARPG to date with such a shallow story, shit magic/phys armor system, worst UI to date etc. This is all my opinion and I can totally see tons of people enjoying that game as it has many amazing qualities.

Total Warhammer 2 though I'll give you. I still haven't bought it yet but those types of games are really where PC shines.

I totally understand that I might just be jaded and have rose tinted goggles on from yesteryear of ye ol glory days of PC.
