Well now I want a Squirrel, probably shouldn't get one though considering I watched my dumb-ass cat charge head first into a sliding glass door trying to get at one on our patio.

Well, I finally had to make that dreaded call to the vet yesterday. Despite keeping a brave face, he was getting weaker each day, and yesterday he could barely walk. I give him a marrow bone daily, and though he made his best efforts he didn't have the energy to chew it. He would gnaw on it for a minute, then have to take a panting break before trying again. It was heartbreaking. Also the lymph nodes in his throat had finally swollen to the point where he was obviously uncomfortable lying down, and he wasn't getting enough sleep. You'd see him sitting erect struggling to keep his eyes open.

Vet came to my home and did the deed. He literally passed away with his face buried in a bowl of Haagen Dazs ice cream, using what was remaining of his waning life force to get that last bit of vanilla goodness at the bottom of the bowl..

RIP little guy.

We have 12 squirrels that live in our yard with 3 big trees(8-10 after any feeding on a given day). They wander into neighbor yards but they live in ours 22/7 pretty much due to the feeders I have for them. It sounds weird but I think some sleep in the gutters because I keep them clean and they are always on the roof popping their heads out when the cats go out.
We have 2 corn husk stands and a sunflower seed feeder they have access too and they love cleaning up the veggys and breads and stuff we toss out from leftovers and cleaning up from our other 3 bird feeders off the ground.
Most of them will come up on the patio with me when I am going out for the feeders and it is hilarious to watch that many squirrels attempt to eat/play.
Having one as a pet is cool as hell though.

I love my backyard squirrels but I think something keeps getting mine. The ones I was familiar with from a year ago are all gone. I noticed they would often have some pretty nasty wounds on them. I live in a gated lake community so the only natural predators around would be hawks or neighborhood cats.

Squirrels are actually pretty fascinating creatures. I recall reading that they are one of the few animals that use deception: they will fake bury nuts if they think another squirrel is watching them.

That's pretty awesome to have one as a pet. I assume it'll piss or crap whenever and wherever it wants to?

Likely hawks or some other predatory bird, depending on the area maybe an animal. Cats don't typically kill squirrels. They'll chase them for fun but squirrels are both more agile and faster and squirrels can really fuck something like a cat up.
I've had mine over the years bring back tons of moles, mice, birds, rabbits and even a damn opossum one time and most of all snakes but never seen even the best hunters and fastest ones ever come close to catching a squirrel.
I'm thinking if you can see the wounds though it would be some sort of flying animal. Could even be owls or eagles. Raccoons will eat them too.

Got the call I've been dreading for a while tonight. Our sweet Ziva is gone. She's been in and out of the vet for the past month after she stopped eating suddenly. After a few weeks, they found she had a severe case of IBS. Tried all kind of medications, steroids, etc. and she started eating again for a couple days recently and had a huge appetite. Yesterday, she started throwing it all up again, she hadn't gained any weight back yet and when they took her in today she was now down 20 pounds from her original weight. The vets were clueless as to what else to try and they tried contacting other places as well for any other ideas, but apparently some of these cases just come out of nowhere and nothing can fix them. My parents tell me she went peacefully and looked like she was ready to go at that point. I just wish I could have seen her one more time in person. She would have been 7 in another couple of months. Good night, pretty girl.
