> Winston jumps in with no support, leaving your DPS and supports unprotected
> Tesla cannons for 200 damage before dying
> Does this 5 times
> Gold damage

If Winston is jumping in and dying immediately and still has gold damage or elims then your dps actually do suck. I say this as someone who has been guilty of playing Winston like this in the past :p

Not trying to be rude, just quoting because these are classic "bronze" misconceptions. (Actually effects most tiers except maybe top 1%.)

I'm very close to bronze. Statwise my mercy has similar stats to people in grandmaster. I have decent aim but slow reactions (old).

Don't look at grandmasters, it's not comparable at all. You can "accidentally" get the same stats as Grandmasters simply because opponents are knuckleheads. In GM your opponents are actually good, the effort to achieve the same stats in GM as someone in Bronze/Silver/Gold.../Plat is exponential. It's much harder to have good stats in GM. Your stats should blow away GM stats.

My biggest problems are that I don't join voice.

Voice isn't that big of an impact. Mute everyone every game and you're likely to progress much faster than if you don't. Voice is a distraction and a tilt-machine most of the time. Voice only relevant in pre-mades/top tiers* and the rare occurrence in solos... but usually only because your team is already winning. (even in top tiers it's probably very toxic, but the playerbase is more capable of dealing with it.. more tilt-proof).

... and I seem to consistently get terrible teammates.

Terrible teammates should never be an excuse. Yes, there are terrible teammates and unwinnable games, but being "stuck" in an MMR is normally a result of your own play. (Being stuck means unable to progress after many games). If you're at or below a 50% win rate, then that's on you.

--

I bounce between Low-High plat and that's my zone. I play DPS 99% of the time and if I really want to break through, I probably gotta pull a Tenks and learn Support/Tank.

But I don't want to.

And sometimes my DPS play just isn't sharp.

And a lot of times I don't realize I'm in a funk until after my 5th loss in a row, and I reflect on the games. Then I realize I'm stressed/tilted or just tired as hell.

And then I keep playing "just wanting 1 win". And 3 losses later I get one of those "unloseable" games... And I'm content.

Then I sleep, and the next day I'm on fire and go on a 10 win streak.

And the cycle continues.

One day I'll lose a few and quit. Then go in the next day and actually get ahead.

And sometimes it happens and I reach 2800-2900 and think I can get that 3k.
But it's a trap, and I lose focus, and then fall back to 2600-2700.

Etc etc etc.

The life of competitive gaming.

Learn Zeyatta if you want to climb. He can hard carry if you are on point and since he's support you won't have to deal with 4 dps players instalocking and instead you'll fill a role. Biggest issue right now for the life of a support main is required Mercy and I'm so burnt out of playing her and I'm not very good with her to begin with anyways. We'll see what the next patch brings. Zenyatta also benefits heavily from having a Mercy in the backlines with you since she can just heal you when you get jumped.

Unless you're Masters+ just pretend like you're playing with 5 bots. Would you ever really blame allied AI if you lose a game anywhere else? No you'd learn how to play better with the situation you're given.

No hero is a hard carry. No one is carrying games consistently with the exception of extremely good players who get stuck on bad teams, e.g. a pro queueing and getting stuck with a bunch of masters early in the morning. But for all of us shitters on this board... there is no hero you can learn where you can just carry your team to victory more often than not. Unless you’re crazy good at this game, you shoot for anything over a 50% winrate and hope that that gaming experience proves to be enjoyable.

One thing to consider about voice-comm -- I've brought games back from Troll Town with some calm words of encouragement. If you pre-emptively mute everyone, then you can't prevent or slow the descent into rage and defeat.

I'm not saying this happens frequently, but even turning the tide of one coin-flip game every few days with strategic positive words will absolutely impact your climb rate. Try to pay attention next time you hear a calm voice attempting to make call-outs and offering some words of encouragement -- team morale is pretty much the essential resource in games like this and, aside from absolutely shit-stomping your enemies with insane DPS play, v-chat is how we cultivate that resource.

Also keep in mind that I've seen "strategic, calm, positive words" devolve into even more toxicity more often than not as well. People often easily detect the fakeness and redirect their rage to the "positive guy".

Voice comms haven't been too bad for me in High Silver/Low Gold. I think the report system has helped because they were a ton worse. It still hasn't fixed people making retarded picks for heroes, but that happens in all these team games.

Not hard carries exactly, because sometimes your team will be determined to lose no matter what happens, but there are certainly stronger picks than others and heroes which work better at lower rankings because they don't get punished as much by good aim (tracer/pharah) or people just aren't co-ordinated or skillful enough to push into them (symm/pirate ship/any sort of turret defence really), or they don't require high mechanical skill (soldier vs mcree)

I've said it before but the very fact that >2 stacks will run double healer with no mercy into comps that do run mercy in this meta just shows that either people are completely fucking oblivious to the strongest hero in the game, or just want to 'play whats fun herp derp' with no consideration given to the fact they are severely crippling their teams chances of winning.

The key to enjoying Overwatch in my opinion is the following:

Realize that the game does a really good job at putting you where you belong and to stop raging that you should be a rank or two above.

Play the heroes you enjoy and are good at, while still considering team balance to some extent. At lower rank, it's usually better for people to play heroes they are good at than have the perfect team comp.

Team communication are helpful, but not really required. I am always in team chat even though I don't talk a lot, and I am fairly fast on muting annoying/toxic players. I usually limit my talking to just call for regroup, calling flankers, and trying to time ultimates...and those not even all the time.

The last thing is this...stop after a few losses. Don't keep playing or you'll tilt and get on a terrible losing streak and get pissed at the game.(I don't always listen to my advice on this one.)

I think the biggest issue of toxicity in the game is people refusing to accept their ranking as the place they actually belong to. I usually see this in people with great mechanical skills but terrible game sense...like a McCree that has incredible aim, but always die due to poor positioning.

I played one with a girl streaming (at least she had to be) because she was playing widow and was partied with 4 whiteknights, it was actually comical how bad she was but if you even BREATHED into your mic these fedora knights would starting REEEEEEing in her defence

Her widow was astronomically bad, it was so funny i was almost in tears after the game from laughing

I have, most do Mercy that's true, I've seen a lot of D'va too. I've had some play reaper, junkrat and zenyetta that I can remember. I know I've seen other heroes too.

Reminds me of this joke.

What's the difference between the Mercy at master and a Mercy in silver?

The rank of her boyfriend. :)

I'm only level 30. I played a bit when this first came out, stopped, and recently started again. There are a number of new maps and heroes so I think my biggest problem at the moment is 101 shit. Not knowing maps intimately or abilities of some of the newer heroes. But I find this game to be considerably easier than TF2 - which I played quite a bit. Also made the learning curve easier except for the massive amount of heroes in this game.
