Far Cry 5’s Map Editor
Hello Map Editors!
With the launch of Far Cry 5 quickly approaching, we wanted to briefly turn our attention from Hope County and the Project at Eden’s Gate to another key game feature for our community: Far Cry Arcade.
We wanted to take some time to give creators and players a sneak peek at what they can expect with the newest version of Far Cry’s map editor. Here’s a quick snapshot of some features coming with Far Cry Arcade:
So. Many. Assets.
Far Cry Arcade will feature more than 9,000 assets, including the full roster of weapons, vehicles, animals and enemies from Far Cry 5, for creators to use. For the first time, this will include assets Far Cry 5 and other Ubisoft games: Far Cry 4, Far Cry Primal, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, Assassin’s Creed Unity, and Watch Dogs! The assets from other Ubisoft games will include objects, structures, but also vegetation types, rocks, caves, decals etc.
Far Cry Arcade will also continue to grow after launch with at six updates that will introduce new assets to the map editor including assets from the three different DLC experiences coming to Far Cry 5.
Game Modes: Multiplayer and more!
Creators will be able to build maps for PvP multiplayer game modes including Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch. Place weapon pickups and vehicles strategically, to create the best experience for up to 12 players who’ll fight on your map.
In addition to multiplayer, you will be able to create maps in four different Solo & Co-op game modes: Assault, Outpost, Journey, and our new game mode Bounty Hunt: track and kill the target(s) before reaching an extraction zone.
Loadouts For Your Players
Map builders can tailor player’s experiences for maps by personalizing loadouts including weapons, attachments, ammo types, gear and throwables for each map. You can even create asymmetrical loadouts for each team in Team Deathmatch!
Far Cry Arcade also includes a variety of modifiers, including no fall damage, low gravity, friendly fire, timers and more, to give your maps a different feel.
More Editing Options
We’ve heard from builders that they would like more in-depth tools for their maps. With a massive list of new options, we thought we would detail a few of the incoming updates:
- Place omnilights and spotlights in your map, and control multiple parameters: color, intensity, flickering frequency, and more!
- Use electrical sparks, fires, smokes, and many more visual effects to add more details to your map.
- Place water volumes, resize them to your liking, and change their appearance!
- Add ‘Generic shapes’ to your map, apply over 100 different textures on them, and use geometry to give free rein to your imagination!
Map builders will also have a ton of environmental parameters including controlling the day/night cycle, selecting from new weather presets, adding fog, placing a 3D backdrop and more! All in an effort to hone in on your perfect mood for your map.
AI
Far Cry Arcade will also give builders more variety for their use of AI in their maps. Various AI appearances can be used across the map while also using new ‘control zones’ that can force your AI (NPCs or animals) to stick to specific areas areas. There will also be a diverse Far Cry bestiary to pick from including the fan favorite Yeti!
Audio
Finally, for those looking for more audio options, we have added options to include ambient sounds from a creepy forest to a quiet jungle, or the depths of a dungeon, and many more!
New music themes from the Far Cry Franchise, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Unity can also be added to your maps!
Overall Upgrades
Along with new features, Far Cry Arcade will also include a huge list of general improvements including:
- Terrain textures tiling is improved: cliffs have never been easier to create!
- Ziplines entry and exit points can now be placed freely in your map.
- Select the appearance of the ocean, and the strength of its waves.
- Add a respawn timer to weapon and ammo pickups placed in your map.
- Use climbable, destructible and explosive objects to your advantage when creating a map.
Final Tips
Before we let you go, we wanted to highlight a couple final tips for newcomers and veteran builders alike:
- When players acquire weapon skins or clothes in the shop, those will be carried over when playing in the Arcade maps. Equip a great outfit to make a big impression on your opponents, or impress your co-op partner!
- There are 2 types of lobbies allowing you to play multiplayer maps:
Public: After each round, 3 players are randomly selected to pick a map. All players in the lobby then vote among those 3 maps (there’s also a pick from the Arcade, and the replay option). When it's your turn to pick, you can choose a featured map, a map you’ve favorited, or one you’ve published to showcase your talent!
Private: The same process as for a public lobby is followed, but only people who know the password will be able to join this lobby. Those can be used in conjunction with parties to easily create multiplayer matches between friends and play only the map you want!
- When you publish a map multiple times, it’ll automatically replace the previous version. You can see which version a map is at by checking its details in the Arcade. And as a source of inspiration, you can check out all the official Ubisoft maps we’ll be releasing with the game!
