Ok so yeah, can someone give me a good new player guide on this beast. I'm playing with my brother and I'm just barely past the intro, I think the second quest. All I want to know is the bigger concept stuff of killing shit. So far it seems like:
1. L2P noob - Figure out weapon combos and dodge
2. Keep your weapon sharp? Is that a big deal?
3. Weapon choice... I just wanna specialize in ONE for now and work off that. So I picked the Katana thing, long sword

I get the basic idea of quest, kill, loot, turn in for more gear. Beyond that I'm lost. Is there min maxing in stats? Armor I have no idea. I think I saw weapon affinity. A zillion things but I'm really looking for the bigger impact stuff of actual combat so I'm not overwhelmed.

Oh also I saw him jump on somethings back that looked fun. I also see you can chop off things like a tail, sweet.

1) For shield weapons, you can also block instead of dodge
2) Yes. Important. At lower sharpness levels you also graze more (bounce back when attacking, breaking combos).
3) My suggestion is to join up with your brother, and then go to the gathering hub. There are two quest givers there, one for regular quests, one for special arena. The special arena lets you fight mobs with pre-set gear. That way you can try out different weapons easily, you see what weapons you can use when selecting the quest. Not sure if that is unlocked from the very start though.

The hammer is a fairly beginner friendly weapon.

Affinity is your ability to crit I think. Some weapons have negative affinity, but you can raise that with different skills to offset it. Not something you need to consider early on.

Some quick starting tips
- With flying mobs, bring flash pods (crafted by flash bugs). Can bring extra flash bugs with you and craft while out on a mission.
- You can save different loadouts, both equipment and items you bring
- In the crafting menu, craft every ? you can to see what you can make. Look at it regularly to see if new items show.
- Bring bombs in loadouts where you want to kill a mob.
- Demon dust and Hardened dust is great to bring as they buff you and the teammates/palicos in your vicinity
- While exploring, each map has two nodes where you gather them (when you get high rank, the items on those maps are different, so have to gather again), you get items that give research points. These nodes can "crit" while gathering, getting you items that can start quests or get added to the items you can cook with. You only need to crit once to get the item.
- Make sure to capture at least one of every mob
- Capturing is "easier" as you skip the last stage, but you miss out on some things you can only carve (gems)
- Go on explorations of the zones on your own. Each zone lets you get quests that befriends a different tribe of palicos. Doing those will give your own palico new trinkets to equip. When you are two people, you won't be able to befriend them.
- For guild cards, to get, or send, you can select all and send/receive all at once.
- Remember, that when you unlock the bounty part, to actually equip bounties and turn them in when you do them. Rewards from them are used to upgrade armor.
- Item rewards you see as "trade in" can be sold for money.

For things like stats, resists, abilities, I wouldn't worry so much about it at first. Until high rank, you mostly use tiers and mix and match as you go. Same with weapon elements and the likes. For the first 50+ or so hours you just scavenge.

PS: I've duoed the vast majority of the game quests, so entirely doable. However, do note that there are only two difficulties of mobs so to speak. Single player and multi player. So playing with with 2 will increase the difficulty of the mobs the same as if you were 4.

Uh you just need guard 3, and/or guard up and you can block anything.

G5 is a waste
It's more of a luxury thing. Way less health and stamina loss when blocking and far less chipping too. Plus I'm not sure if G3 will protect you from Teos supernova.

I'm so glad exp is retroactive in this game. I had an assigned quest asking me to kill two B-52s (Bazelgeuse). Well I put off that quest for a few days cause I didn't feel like being bothered with him. I finally decided to do the quest this morning. What a pain in the ass quest. You find one B52 and another one pops up. So you have to deal with two at one time and it was a huge clusterfuck. You have to constantly dodge both of them and avoid the fire pods dropping from the air. I was able to finish the quest in a group and I went from HR 29 to 47 after completing that quest. I'm guessing I was soft capped at HR 29 and all the exp I gained sat there until I was able to finish the level 29 quest.

I really want to do a LS build but it seems that the best one is a Divine Slasher and you need arena currency to make it. Anyone who done it can tell me how bad of a grind is it?

I just built the xeno horn to try out horns. Pretty interesting type of play. I'm sure I suck at it since I'm trying to remember the songs so always doing those combos over and over.

I have the bow for the power shot build but I'm not good at it and need a couple pieces to complete the set.

I main charge blade, have the nergigante one maxed and need a couple horns from. Black Diablo for that one.

Been having so much fun I actually bought the monster hunter for switch (Japanese only) so I have some monster hunter action at work. Although I feel like that game is way harder than world. But meh. I'm only 43 in mhw so still working on it!

I finally hit my first real brick wall last night. Tempered Kirin for the HR level 49 quest. I tried last night for about 2 hours trying to kill him in a group and everyone was a complete wipe. Her thunder attack was 1 shotting people. I then tried her solo and it was close a few times but when she goes super saiyin blue it's game over for me. Guess I need to make a good anti Kirin bow set since i had better results with ranged than melee. Armor with lots of Thunder resists, a fire bow and work on getting my Thunder mantle before I try her again.

Hammer is really good for Kirin and what I used to beat him. That area he starts @ with the slope is good times with it.

Okay I'll add you when I get home.

Man the way he/she moves and attacks seems like a slow weapon would be a nightmare. Just seems like ranged or a fast weapon would be much easier with Kirin.

I raged and built an Ingot Anti-Thunder set. Went in with my Hammer and Thunderproof mantle and wrekt that fucking whore. I died for a straight 90 minutes. Before I rage quit. Then came back the next day in my Anti-Tempered Kirin Suit.

Do it solo, the group mode is worse.

Any weapons that are more mainstream and popular? Or generally agreed on as being solid weapons?

I've tried the Long Sword Katana which was pretty good. Also the Great Sword which I actually kicked ass with but the movement is sloooow. Now I'm looking at this Charged Blade thing, which is kinda intimidating.

I also played with the Lance and the dual wield thing in the training room.

I'm still very early into it. 4 hours, just killed the 3rd mission Pukie monster.

I've been using the switch axe recently. Still kinda new to it but it seems good so far.

Safest strat for melee against Kirin is to just hit an run. She'll prance around for a few seconds and you stand back and wait till she stops then smack her in the face once or twice and back off. Repeat for 10-20minutes. So hammer works well for that since it has good upfront damage and KO.

But yeah ranged makes Kirin a million times easier, shes overtuned as fuck for melee compared to every other monster in the game, just makes for a boring fight.

Came from using Dual Blades on the 3ds games and wanted something with more breaking power in MHW. I chose Switch Axe and haven't regretted it once.

Thanks think I'll try that strat to wear her down.

Lance with guard up...just block everything and high poke the horn to victory
Does it block the AoE thunder attack too? I know I died to it once unless I was facing the wrong way.

How does multiplayer scaling works? Does it gets more difficult as more people join or there are only two difficulty settings like single player or multiplayer? I wonder if it's the same difficulty doing it monsters with 2 people opposed to 4 people.

Think someone said yesterday that there are only two difficulties, single player and multiplayer. Doesn’t matter if it’s two or four, same difficulty.

3pc Uragaan can block everything in the game, I'm pretty sure. When I fight Kirin with my Lance, I stand in her face and just up poke after every bolt of lightning (Can get slightly animation locked with a counter, and it can double bolt pretty often)

Multiplayer is a flat flag. If you are solo w/cat, it has 100% hp. The moment someone joins your game, until you leave that area everything has multiplayer HP, which is 260% I believe.
