So he has become one of my favorite "Indy" writers and wanted to recommend his stuff. He reminds me a bit of Sanderson with his unique magic systems:

1. Travelers Gate Trilogy - The Traveler's Gate Trilogy (3 Book Series)

His first series, so the writing is a little rough around the edges. Basic premise is that there are a group of magical territories connected to the normal realm that people (called travelers) can draw power and summon from. Pretty good overall but has some flaws, 4/5. Trilogy is finished

2. Elder Empire
https://www.amazon.com/Shadow-Sea-E...8&qid=1476847838&sr=1-5&keywords=Elder+empire

Very unique writing on this. There are two main characters, and for every release he releases two books, one that follows each character. The timeline for each book more or less matches the other, and you get to see multiple perspectives of certain events when their paths cross. Great magic system and world building for this one, currently 4 books released (2for each character), 4.5/5.

3. Cradle
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...1_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=761JBQR5QHWB1X6ETJJF

Fantastic series so far, second book was just released. Love the magic and progression of the main characters so far, 5/5.

They are all pretty easy reads so if you are looking for something fantasy give it a try

I remember when you first posted this, I went to Goodreads and checked the reviews. Tons of high ratings, for sure. But the negative ones (for Traveler's Gate) gave such clear examples of (pardon my lack of tact) shitty writing that I shied away.

I want to believe, because I'm always on the lookout for a new series or author. Is it possible that I'm just putting too much stock in his first effort, and it gets a lot better from there?

Yeah the travelers gate had some rough writing for sure. It was his first series and it definitely showed in places. He has gotten quite a lot better in his latest two series, but the writing quality itself isn't going to compare to some of the bigger authors. It's good enough at this point to not detract from the story though.

His main draw is easy to read with interesting magic systems, worlds, and characters. The books are just fun (and cheap).

Ok, maybe I'll give it a shot then. Thanks for the reply. If I do read it, I'll be sure to report back.

Just finished the 1st 3 books of the Cradle series. 100% worth the read. Probably my favourite indy writer now.

Finished it not too long ago, more of the same from the first 3 books (which is good). My only real complaint is the length of the book, it’s over a hundred pages shorter than blackflame and the shortest in the series.

Best book of the series IMO. Took only a couple nights to finish though.

In case people read the books I won't spoil. But the explanation at the end was great. He did a great job of putting you there with his description.

I can not express this enough how fun these books are to read. People on this board should start reading this series. It's right up a ton of folks alley.

Void! Get these books man!
Oh shit, apparently I'm not good at remembering when I say stuff like this! I did read them, and loved them. The only disappointment I had was that somehow I thought it was a completed trilogy, so halfway through the final book I'm thinking there is no way this is going to wrap up...and of course it didn't. Other than that, they were great, and I highly recommend them. I haven't read his other series yet, but Cradle was fantastic. Thank you for the recommendation!

And oh shit, I see book 4 is out from your other post! Woohoo! Is this the final book, or is there more? I kind of want there to be more, now that I've accepted that it wasn't a trilogy.

LOTS more. Not sure how he wraps this up with less than 3 more books.

Travelers gate is a bit rough but still entertaining, while the elder empire series is closer in quality to Cradle series and also very entertaining

Just finished Skysworn, and loved it. Agree with the comments about it being a little short and perhaps a tiny tiny step down from the others because of that, but only barely. Really looking forward to the next books. Now I need this guy to fucking get his Sanderson upgrade so he can write another book in 3 months!

Blackflame just released in May of this year, so he’s going at a good pace. I mean it’s not like Sanderson accidentally writes another book and releases it a couple of months later every time or anything.

I devoured the first Cradle book in one sitting, but feel that the second is really missing something, as I find myself struggling to get through it. The only highlights thus far are the Suriel/Abidan bits. Second book got better once
Eithan
took the stage. Finished the third book in a sitting, probably going to do the fourth book over the weekend. Wish it was done. Grabbed the Traveler's Gate trilogy.

Very good author.

A+ Recommendation.

Elder empire series is also pretty good. Travelers gate is OK, he definitely gets a lot better as a writer in the later series’
