Futurama didn't really hit its stride until season 3 and most of the super memorable episodes are season 4 onwards. I think the first season of disenchantment was strong enough to give season 2 a watch when it comes out.

Season 1 Futurama's first half was hit and miss and was slow, and had pacing and sound issues. However Futurama was firing on all cylinders by midway through season 1. You're opinion is awful.

It's weird because I don't think I've ever seen a Groening show where the previous episode actually mattered, which makes this a rather unique experience.

You can tell this first 'part' is doing a lot of world building. Most of the episodes introduce some sort of quirky character into the mix and its only towards the later chunk where you see this begin to pay off. My personal favorite is the 'grad student' but having Matt Berry as the voice of a prince stuck as a pig is just pure genius.

As a person who has watched Futurama S1-5 repeatedly (scary number of times) in the background over the past years, I can say this is nowhere near as good. I've trudged through 7-8 episodes with nary more than a slight chuckle here or there, no smiles just bored-face. And yes, by mid S1 Futurama was gold, all the way through S5.

And while there was no direct ep-to-ep plot as Gavin is pointing out, there are plenty of references to old things in later episodes, which is IMO as far as shows like this should go (Sunny in Philly and Rick and Morty do a fantastic job of it as well). My personal favorite is The Fing-longer being used while explaining the penguin/darkmatter-oil mission, after previously being a "What If" situation. Probably just from the bonus points of the name itself, Fing-Longer.

In fact, I think that alone might be better than this show already. I'd buy a Fing-Longer. Or his machine that lets everyone hear me boom edicts out in his glorious voice.

This entire show just seems completely phoned in. Like Netflix offered Groening money to do a show, he wasn't interested, then they offered him more money and said "we don't even give a shit if it's good"

That's pretty spot on. There is just something missing from every single episode. I can rewatch Futurama for the xth time and catch something new that makes it more awesome, but I have little interest in watching this again to try and find those nuggets. I don't think they exist.

I thought about it a while after watching the show and my conclusion was that the issue is that non of the characters in Disenchantment are actually likable.

This may seem like a pretty random gripe, but I also thought it was lazy as fuck to just directly copy voices from Futurama and The Simpsons. The mother superior is Agnes Skinner, the hooker fairy is Petunia, and Odvar is Merg, the Trisolian high priest.

I'm sure there are more.

The King's son made me instantly think of Simpson's Ralph Wiggum. Sounds like the same voice actor. Don't care enough to look it up.

I finished the series last night. Overall I enjoyed it, wasn't a huge commitment with 30 minute episodes. I won't be bummed if it doesn't return but will definitely watch it if it does.

barely made it through first episode

all characters look like copies from futurama or simpsons, jokes are weak.

groening has like 500 million dollars, why is he churning out this dreck?

Futurama and Disenchantment are in the same universe.

It's Simpson's/Futurama with an excess of dumbness, drugs, drinking and other crap. There's also a lot of chasing and fight scenes to avoid dialog, it seems. It's simple and lazy as shit. Somehow I'm on episode 10, no idea how. It's just been on in the background all day, since I ran out of Ozark episodes...

All this show reinforces is how good old Simpsons and Futurama really were.

wife watched an episode near me when i was playing warframe so i didn't really catch it, then i sat and pointedly watched it with her and enjoyed it. It starts kind of slow. the "elf what doesn't want to life elf life" and "the girl is the fighter" tropes annoyed me at first but got past that pretty quick. a good bit of the humor grew on me after re-watching some of the episodes my wife fell asleep during.

I really liked how the episodes strung together into one story. that was pretty nice, i would have enjoyed more futurama like that. I thought b y the end of the last epsode that they'd made all the characters pretty well rounded and atleast marginally interesting.

I can't say it has the raw humor that futurama has, but i enjoyed it all the same. futerama had a distinct advantage because its jokes were some times built on science puns, nerd puns, scifi tropes, pop culture tropes etc. all disenchantment can use is (fantasy) nerd puns, fantasy puns, mythology puns and "look how bad things were in teh dark ages" puns (which actually got kind of annoying. every episode some jerkoff would comment on how wreched midevil life was while looking at the camera and winking).

I tried, I really tried. 90% of the jokes are not funny and that makes the funny ones seem more funny until you realize you could just go watch 10 min of Bojack or Rick and Morty for content that is light years better.
