It's kind of impressive how polarizing the reviews in this thread are and it's not just the usual hates everything people that have different opinions from the majority. I get that people are going to have different opinions, but it feels like I'm taking crazypills or that I saw an entirely different movie than some of the people in this thread.

Agreed. I basically defend/like 80% or more of the movies I watch, but this was painful. Maybe it's an okay brainless movie and I held it to a higher standard because I've wanted a Venom movie for like 20 years now. Maybe people are just super basic. Maybe I'm a snob. Who the fuck knows.

I just hope Venom 2 is A: Rated R and B: not written by whatever highschool film and video class wrote this one.

Edit: OH FUCK I JUST REMEMBER THE SLOW-MO TOM HARDY PUNCH AT THE END. Jesus Christ this movie.

It was almost like this was 2 different movies filmed at the same time and badly spliced together up until Eddie and Venom get together. Aside from that, and the awful shaky cam fight at the end I liked it.

7/10

Aside from a giant chunk of the movie, I liked it!

It HAS to be rated R...It was so glaring on how much it took away from the movie being PG-13.

Just saw it, really good, much better than something like Ant and the Wasp

The early Eddie/Venom scenes were cringe in parts

Ya I saw venom in IMAX, I thought it was going to be the imax dolby with the sweet recliner/vibrating seats, then I got there and realized a star is born was in that movie theatre and venom was in the normal imax with no recliner/vibration seat. Kind of baffled me, I figured venom had way more action for those vibrating seats than a star is born. thanks amc

I'd give it a high 7 to low 8 out of 10

Paid matinee price but wouldn't have minded paying full.

Hardy carries this film by himself. His performance was the best part.

Decent action scenes.

Wasn't particularly excited at the prospect of a film about a character who is intrinsically linked to Spider-Man not including Spider-Man. No white spider symbol on chest, ugh.

I would so love to see a Spider-Man film where he faces off against this character. But I wouldn't be all surprised if Venom becomes the centerpiece to Sony's non spider-man "spider-verse" movies.

Riot was introduced too late in the film to really make me care about the final fight.

As people have already said, don't know how the shuttle launch didn't kill Venom with both sound and fire. Although fire/heat never really seemed to come into play, I did like the symbiote mentioning that fire is lethal to their species since Carnage is immune to sonic attacks and is only hurt by fire/extreme heat now.

Not a big fan of the "compatibility issue" but that wasn't even introduced into the comics until decades after the character was introduced and I hated it as much then

I'm wondering if they'll ever discuss the subject of the permanent bond that a symbiote can do with its host. I figure that will be how Carnage is introduced, already more powerful than Venom and Eddie will have to merge with the symbiote to even stand a chance (which shouldn't matter because Carnage has always been physically more powerful).

Speaking of: glad they're setting up for Carnage in the sequel, not so glad about Harrelson being Cletus Kasady; he strikes me as being too old for the character but whatever.

Finally, I like that they mentioned the Daily Globe incident and Brock having to leave New York to come to San Fran. Honestly, my biggest problem with the Brock character is they should have played up his "obsession with getting the story no matter how it may affect others" angle up and even play in a little "it's never my fault" to show how, unlike Spider-Man, Venom never thinks about consequences or responsibilities of his actions.

I thought the exact same thing. And he LOOKS like senior citizen now.

I'm even against the non Secret Wars origin version. I can not emphasize enough how huge Secret Wars was when it hit...but I see why they went the route they did.

Kind of tired of Harrelson in general. He's a character actor. His longevity has reached its full span for a character actor.

Not sure how he keeps getting work. Sorry state of affairs in Hollywood I guess.

One interesting note is while Venom's audience was predictably male leaning at 59%, only 36% of the overall audience was 25 years of age or older. Comparatively, 46% of Ant-Man and the Wasp's audience was 25+, 46% of Suicide Squad and 69% of Justice League. In fact, Venomhad a younger overall audience than even Spider-Man: Homecoming which played to an audience of which 49% was 25 years of age or older.

My niece is 13 and into creepypasta and whatnot and loved this movie. That's the exact type of person who would be into Venom in the late 80's when he first came out.

If you guys remember Venom was always criticized for being a bad spiderman villian with style emphasized over substance. One of the more popular in a long line of cool looking shallow supervillians culminating in Doomsday who kills Superman with no backstory given whatsoever.

I think they might have hit their target demographic perfectly.

It had a much larger under 25 audience then most comic book movies (which already have a lot) at 64% so I think you're right on track there.

saw this today, it was ok. the last 40 mins with Venom is cool, although the bad guys are absolute shit. even worse than ant man 2 i'd say. The first half of the movie is boring as dogshit, just tom hardy doing shit nobody cares about. I'd disagree about Tom Hardy "carrying" the movie, he didn't feel right at all for the part and I think someone young and new ala the kid in Spider-man might have been far better.

It 100% feels like a movie made 15 years ago, for example one minor sub plot is how Hardy loses his job at "the network" (TV) and is super bummed about it. Yeah, that would be true in 2005. In 2018 he'd just go on youtube/twitch, make his own new stream, and get way more popular, famous, and rich.

If you like comic books its worth a watch, maybe at home maybe at theaters I dunno. One or two decent fight sequences, but the final fight is more Black Panther in a "my god how much CGI can you put on a screen" bad way.

Venom is great, that is really the only character you give a shit about and carries the movie. A voice and a black and white cum splatter. There was definitely some core ideas in here that could have been executed and written a lot better to make a good movie, but I guess thats the difference between Sony and MCU.

Not if he's been deplatformed.

Wasn't horrible, not great. I dont know what it is with Fox/Sony but it's like they saw everything Marvel has been doing since IM1 and said "nah, we don't need to put THAT much effort in".

Last 40 minutes were pretty good, and I'd go as far as to say I enjoyed it. The first part was painfully slow. Would def be down for more Hardy as Venom, but needs to have more Venom screen time and bump it up to an R rating.

Just finished watching it, Enjoyed it quite a lot.
There have for sure been worse marvel movies, and overall, an R rated version would have been nice, but it was entertaining and worth the admission price for sure

Just watched it myself. It was very enjoyable. 8/10. Definitely far from Avengers: infinity war. Bias in my opinion, I am a huge, huge Venom fan. It satisfied that.
Pros:
I have a hard on for Tom Hardy.
Everything between venom and brock was mostly gold.

"Jump out the Window Eddie." *takes the elevator* "Pussy."
"What do you want to eat tonight?" "Tater tots and chocolate"

Fight scenes felt very venomy, with goop and shit flying everywhere and throwing people around.
Venom showed some personality and empathy for earth. "I'm a loser from where I'm from, just like you are here."

Excited about Cletus Cassady. But...if that doesn't get an R rating. I don't know what if it can even be the same character.

Negs:
Everyone else I didn't really care for. The bad guy was very stereotypical. The bad guy symbiote didn't have enough time to build up to someone that is scary and threatening.
Weird to have venom sneak eddie's ex-bae and frech kiss their way over. That was uh... alright. I'm ok with sexy girl venom I guess?
Last fight scene was really hard to follow at times.
CGI was a bit weird at times.

Nitpics
The old ladys reaction to seeing someone being eaten was a little....meh.
