Who the fuck cares? The show is vastly superior to the books and has been since season 4.
What the fuck are you talking about? The show's writing took a nosedive in season 5 because they didn't have the books to use as a baseline.

Oh yeah books 4 & 5 of ASOIAF were literary marvels.

I’m ecstatic that HBO will finish this series instead of GRRM. Couldn’t be a better outcome.

Yeah I'm ecstatic that the genius writers behind that Scooby Doo Dorne rescue mission will be filling in the gaps with what lardass hasn't told them. Sure, books 4 and 5 are the weakest of the series, but the dipshits behind the last 3 seasons are about as impressive as RA Salvatore or Dan Brown.

Books 4 and 5 are full of meandering plot masturbation that GRRM should be ashamed of, and the show very effectively corrects it.

I’m glad I don’t have to slog through his next 1200 page tome of dookie to find out how the major plots tie up.

I just finished my first reread of the series (cheat codes enabled - skip every single Danny chapter, also skip Tirion chapters in book 5) and came through it liking books 4 and 5 quite a bit more the second time around.

Skipping 22 chapters of Tirion/Danny deadwood boosted book five almost to being great. The shit with Jon Connington, Quentin Martell, and the Ironborne was so much more tolerable even if I still don't understand why we are introducing shit like "Rhaegar's son actually wasn't murdered by The Mountain" in book fucking five of a seven book series. Quentin Martell has more chapters than Bran than gets torched by a dragon? What the fuck are we even doing?

Book 4's biggest strike against it is that it has plot elements in it that have barely moved or not moved at all in 13 goddamn years. Sansa, Samwell, Cersei, Jamie, and Brienne are all stuck.

That's because Quentyn is alive. We never saw the death. The person we are made to believe is Quentyn is unrecognizable due to the extreme burns.

That wasn't what I got out of it, it isn't in the wiki, and it isn't even my point. I don't understand why GRRM decided to continue to expand the story he was telling with new characters and threads when what he needed to be doing was starting to bring things together. Even if Quentyn is alive he's one of a couple characters trying to marry Danny when we've only got two books left and she still isn't even in Westeros. Bran's arc has moved at a glacial pace. Sam's just arrived at the citadel 13 goddamn years ago.

I think GRRM gave himself an impossible restriction (two more books) and it's choked his ability to get anything done. Later this year we've got Fire and Blood coming out. It's 736 pages. It probably came easy (as easy as his writing comes for himself) because he wasn't trying to solve the impossible puzzle of how to end his series in two more books and also have it meet his standards.

I don't remember where I read it, but he admitted that it's probably going to take 8 books to wrap it up. This was several years ago; maybe shortly after the release of Dance?

Edit: I want to say that it was actually in the preface of Dance, but I can't find my book to confirm.

Before the show spoiled it, it took like 2 minutes maybe to explain why Sandor was alive. An 18 minute video for Quentyn isn't even the long explanation? I'm just gonna go with nah, and if you end up right, I'm gonna be like "ok".

The 18 minute video is the long explanation. The short explanation is that unrecognizable burnt bodies prove nothing, and the miller’s boys and Mance Rayder (Rattleshirt) establish precedence that we shouldn’t trust that they are who we are told they are.

What's the motive?

There’s a longer explanation, but it’s gonna take some effort on your part:

Alive or dead I'm still going to feel about the same regarding the amount of time spent in Dorne or with Dornish characters in books four and five - not all that interested. My investment is primarily with Starks, Targaryians, and Lannisters. The time we spend elsewhere is time we aren't spending moving along what's already been established. Since pretty early on I've been waiting for our splintered pack of dire wolves to finally reunite and rather than even start doing that hanging out with Quentyn and Jon Connington.

It's what I like so much about the show. It's at least some payoff. We get to have Bran, Arya, Jon, and Sansa all together in Winterfell again. A Clash of Kings came out 20 goddamn years ago. That's how long it has been since Theon faked Bran's death and all the Starks still believe Bran and Rickun to be dead. There are a bunch of people that need to know that Bran is still alive! Hey, Sam and Bran met each other! Now Sam can tell Jon! Wait, he took an oath not to? Aaaargh!

And then Bran has three chapters in book five. Three. I want my dire wolves to start coming back together goddamn it. Starting bringing this shit together!

Don’t have a strong case for motive, but the video paints it as Quentyn successfully rides the dragon out of the dragon pit. His friends don’t want to reveal that he’s alive and able to ride dragons (since they’ll be stealing at least one to take back to Dorne). The theory is informed, but admittedly highly speculative.

As an aside, I enjoy those videos because they point out the nuances that I missed when reading.

Is it wrong that every time someone mentions Winds of Winter, I hear this as my internal soundtrack...
