So what would you guys recommend for a processor and mo bo these days. dont want to spend a ton, but the proc I have is like 5-6 yrs old now i5 3570k. Was thinking Ryzen 2700x I can get one at microcenter for like $269 plus their mo-bo deal. Was no issue, but now i see degradation in performance with BF5. I had to turn the shit down to med settings at 1080p and thats even with a 1070. I hear this game is really proc bound.

Sometimes I get this hard stop, where everything just stops on my screen, then it catches up.

You should only buy a Ryzen if you're looking for reasons to kill yourself imo.

Edit: For clarification, feel free to read the shit I went through in Computer Problems thread

That show's as a CPU error on QLED's, and hard stops the boot process with no video, and no beep codes.

I recently built a ryzen gaming rig few months ago. Had no issues at all and I even overclocked and it runs like champ.

I've been pretty happy with my Zen workstation upgrade over summer and I just upgraded 2 home gaming machines to Ryzen. Of the 3 boards I've used I would easily recommend the MSI Mortar Extreme B450 for a painless setup, low maintenance gaming system.
@ home
(1) Gaming system: Ryzen 1600x, B450 MSI Mortar + 2x8GB 3200 MHz RAM (Team Dark Pro)
  • Just built a few weeks ago & but its running great with an RX570 8GB, no complaints yet.
  • Cooling: quiet @ load using old Hyper 212 EVO
  • Reused decent old cooler but required hacked rigging with adapter bracket + rubber spacer on MB.
(2) htpc/light gaming: Ryzen 2400G, X470 Asrock m-ITX + 2x4GB 3600 MHz RAM (Team T-Force EXTREEM).
  • expensive
  • Shitty BIOS, just waiting on RMAd replacement board from Asrock. Linux was fine but Win10 had BSODs right after install.
  • Cooling: quiet using Wraith Prism from 2700x.
@ work

(3) Ryzen 2700x, X470 Asus Crosshair VII + 32 GB trident Z, cl14 3200 RAM
  • expensive
  • BIOS has too many deeply nested menus.
  • needs better cooler to strech legs of 2700x
  • BIOS flashback On the good side, if you plan on doing any funky OCing on RAM or CPU
  • LED display for boot progress & error codes.
  • works well for virtualization under Linux for multilpe GPU passthrough!
  • IOMMU group for everything!
  • Cooling: Noctua D15
Pick for gaming system: MSI Mortar B450 Extreme
  • cheap!
  • Install was quick and painless, plug and go out of box, no fiddling required.
  • Nice UEFI bios interface for selecting RAM XMP OCing profiles!! (literally a 1 second click to config vs endless searching and tweaking in Asus BIOS).
  • The UEFI BIOS was nice for both Win10 and Linux dual boot without any tweaking, BSODs or crashes (Asrock BIOS is shitty! Windows would not install with default BIOS settings on GPT partition.)
Overall I have no complaints yet on Ryzen or AM4 (aside from Asrock BIOS) . Only thing I regretted so far is not getting a Noctua tower cooler straight away for the 2700x. The Wraith Prism is to damn loud at load.

Wouldn't trade my 2700X system for anything else on the market. My next upgrade, whenever that happens, will be just more Zen.

Anyone seen some deals on pre built systems? My 6yr old system died a couple weeks ago. Looking for something @800, without vidcard since I have a 970 to use. Hoping to find something better than an old i5 3570k.

Yeah my 2600x is working like a champ so far and every intel/ryzen comparison I have seen showed slim benefits to intel (for gaming) for not so slim differences in pricing and ryzen 2 is supposed to be coming in a few months and potentially put them ahead.

It does get kind of toasty under load but I dunno what cpu temps should be generally. Played CoD for an hour or 2 the other day with HWInfo open and it maxed at 83.6c.

Surprised that the 2700x cooler is loud, my 2600x build with everything stock is pretty quiet.

Intel 8000/9000 series does perform better if you are gaming on a 1080p/144hz monitor. Once you go beyond 1080p AMD and Intel perform basically the same as any game made in the last 5-6 years is GPU limited, not CPU at anything beyond 1080p

IMO id wait to buy a new CPU until January. AMD should be detailing their new 7nm processor at CES which should be as good as anything Intel has to offer if not better.

This hasn't been fully accurate for a few years now. Engines have caught up to multi-threading being a thing, and a CPU that can't handle more than a couple threads will struggle in many scenarios. Ram speeds also matter now.

Bottlenecks aren't so straightforward now that 4k and high refreshes are a thing on top of cores being needed in situations as well as high IPC being needed for MMO's and Unity shit/emulators/others. There are a lot of use-cases that need to be accounted for as a general gamer. Those that just stick to a couple games within the same genre can aim for a relevant setup, but others need to prioritize their buying choice, or just buy the mainstay Intel which comes at a premium.

Ryzen is a fine choice if you know you're not going to need a high IPC or are on a budget. A good Intel is the way to go otherwise, as scummy as it is.

If you have a microcenter near you they usually have some decent instore only prebuilts. I've seen some w/o gfx cards too.

Don't even bother trying to tell people Intel is better, everyone here gargles AMDs cum

My friend has that monitor and it's absurdly good. I don't think there's anything better. The Acer predator might be close but I think falls behind it

I have the 27” TN panel that was pretty popular for a while and is on sale for $349.

I’m torn between adding a second 27” (that I think has great bang for the buck) or stepping up to the 34”.

I feel like the 34” will have better immersion, better panel and less clutter in my desk. But 54” of screen space has its perks too lol!

Thanks for the info.

I really need another SSD this year for gaming. I think I'm going to go with the 1TB 860 Evo. Issue is, I fucking hate installing new drives in my old ass case, and I think I might be out of SATA ports anyhow. Am I going to render the SSD thing worthless by using an enclosure, or are the speeds over USB fine compared to SATA?

It won't be useless, but you're adding the USB stack overhead into the equation. I certainly wouldn't want games or OS on that. Is m.2 an option? Pcie ?

Youre talking a 5-10% performance difference but a $75-100 more expensive system. At least 8700k compared to 2700x
