Hah, I don't like Maher in general but...

Yeah, he's got a point there.

He's got a point kind of? He's a super atheist and played his part in the death of God as much as anyone else. Our metaphysical foundations in the West have been blown apart and one of the things we're trying to use to create a new cultural underpinning after the demise of Christianity are fictional heroes. Nietzche was talking about this kind of shit over a hundred years ago.

Maher just sounds like an old man yelling at clouds about those damned kids today and their beatles hair cuts and rock n roll music ruining america. comic book films are just a trend, its bankable if it isnt DC, so the trend continues as long as it brings the green. 50 years ago it was horrible beach and monster movies. 60 years ago it was bible and space creature movies, 70 years ago it was classical novels. 80s years ago it was classic horror novels. 90-100 years ago it was slapstick comedy. its just pop culture. if you dont get it then get off the planet.

Stan Lee, 1968:

"Let’s lay it right on the line. Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today. But, unlike a team of costumed super-villains, they can’t be halted with a punch in the snoot, or a zap from a ray gun. The only way to destroy them is to expose them—to reveal them for the insidious evils they really are. The bigot is an unreasoning hater—one who hates blindly, fanatically, indiscriminately. If his hang-up is black men, he hates ALL black men. If a redhead once offended him, he hates ALL redheads. If some foreigner beat him to a job, he’s down on ALL foreigners. He hates people he’s never seen—people he’s never known—with equal intensity—with equal venom.

Now, we’re not trying to say it’s unreasonable for one human being to bug another. But, although anyone has the right to dislike another individual, it’s totally irrational, patently insane to condemn an entire race—to despise an entire nation—to vilify an entire religion. Sooner or later, we must learn to judge each other on our own merits. Sooner or later, if man is ever to be worthy of his destiny, we must fill out hearts with tolerance. For then, and only then, will we be truly worthy of the concept that man was created in the image of God–a God who calls us ALL—His children."

fuck you, Bill Maher. stuff like this reaching young minds at a time like the late 60s absolutely had a huge cultural impact.

Well in his mea culpa, he propped up the fact he's not an expert on Stan Lee and people should take that into account when reading his blog post.

I think this is settled.

It would be a point if the idea that comic books/comic book movies are 'profound meditations on the human condition' was actually a prevailing opinion and not a straw man. The truth is that the allegorical nature of the X-Men is actually a ham-fisted mess and the only thing truly profound about it is just how many different ways you can interpret it.

If the strife between humans and mutants was meant to be evocative of real life racial discord, consider that the 'evil' mutants not only vastly outnumber the X-Men, but they unquestionably are an existential threat to humanity and the X-Men are basically house wakandans. I remember reading an article some years ago that made a pretty good argument about how early on the X-Men themselves were more representative of Communists than Blacks.

Stan Lee's ex-business manager arrested on suspicion of elder abuse

Keya Morgan, 43, was taken into custody in Arizona after Los Angeles prosecutors charged him with five counts of elder abuse, that include theft, forgery or fraud against an elder adult, false imprisonment of an elder adult and embezzlement. Authorities say Morgan tried to manipulate Lee and act on his behalf without his authority.
Prosecutors said Morgan pocketed more than $262,000 from autograph signings Lee did in May 2018. Morgan took Lee from his Hollywood Hills home to a Beverly Hills condominium where he exerted control over him, authorities said. Lee died in November at the age of 95.
