So I think I'm about to do something I never thought I'd do - ask someone out from work. I think I've already mentioned this chick in this thread and my obvious apprehension. But we are so close now that a number of people have already asked me what the deal is between us. It's pretty obvious that she's really into me. However, she's also young. 24 years old. I'm 32. But so far she doesn't play any of those typical bullshit games. Probably the worst part about her is going to be her friends.

Hopefully. Well, I mean, even the best case is fairly bad.

What is the best case for seizures? That you have developed epilepsy? Just guessing that because I've known a couple of people with it and they seemed to be doing OK once they figured out their triggers.

Yea you don't even need to be told. You already know, which is why you haven't made the move already. Co-workers are bad enough, but when they are 24 who knows how they'll react if shit goes south. But you're gonna get drunk at the Christmas party and fuck her. You know it, that's why you're posting this here now. The party is probably this Friday isn't it? Godspeed.

That age difference isn't that bad. It's company ink that's the bad part.

nothing for it. There's only one question to ask. Do you trust her with your job?

it will be your job, not hers. Because of the age as well as the gender.

maybe the answer is you do. Use the big head for thinkin on this one.

Naw the holiday party was Thursday. There was no banging. But there were like four different coworkers PUSHING for us to hookup. Because it's that obvious we're into each other.

Naw I'm sales and bring in revenue. Way less expendable especially on the solutions consulting side.

And probably meningitis, hoss. It's at least potentially the least chronic. Everything else and you're looking lifelong.

I married a woman I started dating at work, I was two levels above her position so could have ended really badly for me, however even people at work had no idea until almost 2 years into the relationship. I understand the thought process about not dating someone at work, but if your adults when things end it shouldn't matter.

I met my wife at work 13 years ago. Granted, I didn't really give a shit about my job at that place so I probably would have quit if it ended badly anyway. We worked together in the same department for 2 years though and everyone knew we were together and they were all very cool about it.

And every divorce lawyer would be out of a job.

I'm referring to dating people at work specifically. Doesn't mean they all end well but shit doesn't always work out with people you Date no matter how you meet them. At least with people you work with you typically know them better due to the simple fact you've talked to them at work a few times.

The problem with work relationships isn't that they are inherently different than any other relationship. Actually that's the problem itself. They are relationships that can end, and many relationships end badly. However, in the case of dating a co-worker it can adversely affect your career and your livelihood whereas relationships with non co-workers usually don't leak into your professional life.

The idea that dating a co-worker is a bad idea doesn't come from a sense of inevitability. It's just a caution. A pretty reasonable one considering that, depending on where you live, there are typically hundreds or thousands of single women you don't work with and can avoid that possibility altogether.

I don't disagree with you in principle but I'm just stating that not 100% of the time it's a horrible idea.

We all know dating a co-worker carries more risk than a non co-worker. If I were in the situation to do it again, I definitely would but I also know that I could find a new job if I needed to.

I would not however date my boss or a subordinate. Those stakes are too high right there.
