Ok, go ahead and roast me! The video card is more of a placeholder right now. I still need to decide if I want 1440p, and a new monitor, I'll need more drives, etc. And before you ask, yes I need 32GB of memory. Many of the more complex Minecraft modpacks crashed on me constantly with 16GB unless I literally did nothing else on my computer after a fresh reboot. Added a new pair to bring it to 32, and they run like a dream. I can, however, be convinced to buy cheaper memory, but I honestly don't know shit about 4000 vs 3200 vs 2400, pros and cons and price points, etc.

Well, if I was going to spend $1900 I'd cheap out on some things to buy a better video card. They've had 2080s under $700. (dont need the 970 evo or a $70 cooler imo)

Well it was more of a placeholder like I said, but that's good info to have, thank you. I'm hoping to figure things out for video cards after things shake out with this new release today.
Could save close to $100 on an 860 evo m.2 sata

Is there any difference between the 860 and 970 that is worth even worrying about? I'm assuming no, so good catch, thank you!

At most it would be a slightly faster boot but probably not noticeable

The primary speed factor for SSD's in gaming is the instant read access times. Faster(better) SSD's have fast read/write speeds which only marginally play into things like load times as the files are small. The extra speed is useful for large file transfers and the like. So, if all you want the SSD for is for gaming, then the money is better spent getting a larger one or used on something else. The difference between an 970 and a 860 in a game that would see any difference at all might be 1-5 seconds. I'm sure there are benchmarks for gaming loading out there something that might prove things wrong, but I'd be very surprised outside of 1 or 2 niche games.

As someone said somewhere else in the thread I went "Gaudy" with it but I did a quick refresher on my Case/CPU/Mobo and cooling:

new additions:
Core i9 9900k OC'd to 5.0 GHz (stable with Prime95 stress test running)
Corsair h150i Pro
Corsair Crystal Series 570x
ASUS Z390 Gaming-E

"Old" hardware carried over:
ASUS STRIX 1080 GTX 8GB
32 GB Corsair Dominator Pro DDR4-3000
Samsung Evo 970 Pro 512GB m.2
EVGA G3 750W Gold PSU
Case Fans

Still pending:
lower spec m.2 for storage on games/VMs and models.

I know RGB isn't everyone's cup of tea but personally I love it, and I try to at least keep a basic color theme across components. I was going for an alien tech/aurora borealis feel (green/white/purple fading around the fan rings.) I still need to hook up the USB controller for the cooling block LEDs but otherwise love this machine and how it turned out.

The reason for the CPU upgrade is for some model editing (my prior i5 was eating a huge bag of dicks on larger ones) and i'll be doing some VM lab work so the extra threads will help keep multiple systems running and at decent speeds. Just need to do some cable management inside the component area itself and it'll be good to go. Could I have done it cheaper? Sure but whatever :p

I don't know an 860 to compare, but I have a 970 EVO 500 GB--I've never had faster boot, load, or unzip times. I will get another the moment 2gb prices are not prohibitive.

Another thing to like about NVME is that it's right on the board (or PCI-E adapter) and no additional wires.

People wanting to save a couple extra seconds on load times and I'm here getting annoyed that load times on SSD"s are already so fast that I can't read loading screen tips.

Updated with a few lower cost options already mentioned, and a legit video card choice. Still way over my original budget, but fuck it. I have the money, just didn't think video cards would be so expensive, or that I'd want to upgrade resolution, etc.

Went with smaller M2 drive since it is mainly for booting/OS. Added a standard SSD for gaming, and a huge regular drive for crap that isn't on my NAS.

Yeah yeah, I love case fans, sue me!

I still need to decide on a monitor. Anyone have a good suggestion for 1440p, decent for gaming, say 25"+, not ridiculously expensive?

What you do for a case man? 32 GB of mem. It's what I have. Rarely go over 12.

The Fractal Meshify C Dark is the case. It is listed there, just way down.

I talked about the 32GB of memory in my previous post, I actually do see a difference with the more complex Minecraft mod packs. They would crash from being OOM fairly regularly, but when I upgraded from 16 to 32, that all went away.

That's nice. It's gotta be quiet. Didn't know you had a good reason for the 32GB. Pics when put together baby!

Meh, I went the cheap route with my upgrade, $585 for a Ryzen 5 2600, B450 Tomahawk, 16 GB 3200 ram, and a Vega 56 with 3 games.

Going to move this pc over to my wife when Zen 2 and Navi come out likely.

Anyone have any thoughts/experience with this monitor? Will be running with the RTX2080 listed above if nothing else changes. I don't know a lot about TN vs IPS other than IPS is better color/clarity, supposedly. Will I notice a difference? Everything IPS with similar refresh and size is like double that cost. Not saying I won't spend that, but if I don't need to. Still, if I'm going to get a good card, I want a good monitor. I just can't tell what I truly need, and what is just nice to have.

I understand SSDs are amazing, etc. but how do you play games? 1 at a time? A few at a time? Every single game known to man installed, because you never know when your buddies will want to play and you have shitty internet?

I ask, because I have a 500gb Samsung 970 m.2, and then just a 1 TB HDD, and most games go on the HDD. Don't really notice a difference. Few seconds? Who cares. Might be able to save you another $100? And 8TB? wtf? You sure you need that? Lol. All my shows and shit though I delete constantly. Been rolling with a 2TB drive for a while!

I have dozens of Steam games installed at any one time. Do I play them all? Of course not. But if I do want to play one, I don't want to wait an hour for it to download and install. And sorry, there is a definite difference with many games going from HDD to SDD. Battletech and Pathfinder being prime examples. It is sometimes the difference between 60+ second load screens and 15 seconds. Multiple times in a row, because the games are shitty about making you load multiple times to go from one area to another. Go read through the threads for both of those games and you'll see how big of a difference it makes. Over time some of them get improved to where it makes less difference, but I don't necessarily want to wait months before I play a game to make sure they optimize load times first.

As for the HDD, I have one 8-bay NAS with 2x 5-bay expansions, all with 3 TB drives, so 50TB'ish of media just on my NAS. I'm clearly a digital hoarder. Sure, I don't need 8TB at my fingertips, but why not? It is literally tens of dollars difference from a lesser size. I never understood people that skimp on things like that, when it is literally not going to Wendy's once or twice to make up the difference, vs. a ton more convenience.

I'm not really concerned with nickel and diming myself on things like that. I just don't want to spend $700 on a monitor when a $400 one will look pretty much the same to my eyes. If that's the case. I'm hopeful someone has some advice along those lines, since I don't know.

@Dom Guess what's back? The Flicker! I don't know wtf happens when I'm gone all week, because the last time I noticed the flicker was when I had come home from traveling all week.

Just like before, there is a new nVidia driver I could download. I Googled it a bit more and some people fixed the issue with a new cable, but those were all people that used the stock DP cable, and I didn't do that. I had gotten an Amazon Basics DP cable right from the start. Others updated the firmware/drivers of the monitor itself, but the highest Acer goes is Windows 8 64 bit, but I'm on Windows 10.

Maybe I'll flip the cable around, or even try out the stock cable and see if it's the same problem?

I'm not saying it won't make improvements going to SSD, but my use case is different, and for what I play it's fine. If I tend to get into a game more than another one, I'll move it over to SSD, but I'm so ADD about games, that the one time I play it in a month, or 6 months, I don't give a shit that it's on HDD. Or maybe I only play it that much because it's not on SSD? Hmmm!

How's the reliability of the Red drives? I need to re-do all of my storage right now, and potentially wipe the drives, and start fresh. I assume pretty well even out of a NAS situation?
