A lot of things, but for me an underrated thing that really hooked me with EQ was the music. From the theme itself, to Rivervale & Kelethin and everything in between - sometimes I'll youtube it and still to this day get chills. To be 19 again with student loans and burritos and beer in the fridge. Good times man....

I think I was 23-24 when EQ hit, had a pretty cake job working nights which let me stay up all night and play and sleep in the next day, plus I had zero money so $9.89/month was a bargain considering the amount of entertainment I got. I could never see a time where I would have that much time and that little responsibility again and I'm not sure I'd want to lol.

It's all been said, but having to rely on other classes to get shit done (buffs, ports, heals, corpse runs etc) made it special for me. That and a 56k modem that crapped out on me all the time.

EQ graphics were not the best, but they were the best for a huge massive game at the time.
EQ was very challenging, you felt a real sense of danger and death around every corner. Other games, even today just don't compare with that sense of dread.
EQ force you to have a community, if you were a noob you'd go beg buffs off high levels, you HAD to find a group eventually.
EQ had an idea about RvR, it was good, you put the time in , you had the friends you could get good gear. Most games now have no concept of that, you just get free stuff that doesn't matter.

I ran through Highpass Hold before it was cool. It didn't end well.

EQ was great because of the people who played it. The players were always better than the game.

Early beta a shout went out to form a group to help test a new dungeon that wasn't open yet: Befallen. A couple of us volunteer and head that way with a GM in tow who is basically there to observe. We start the slow crawl and we find there's some locked doors but we manage to kill a couple mobs and find the keys and make our way down to the second floor. I forget which mob it was but I ended up getting feared and started running all over the entire dungeon for about 30 seconds (not an exaggeration) and of course we now have a train of the entire dungeon and we wipe (obviously). I remember telling the dev...I think you might want to tone that down just a bit lol!

Early EQ was BRUTAL! Like completely unfair brutal.

I still remember slapping the side of my big old CRT monitor when blinded for the first time, thinking it was broken.

Hiring an actual person to guide a friend and I from Halas to Freeport. Agroed a lion in EK, guide and friend died on the ramp to Highpass and then I died to thief camp in Highpass.

Passing people along the river from Freeport to Qeynos so encumbered by banded armor that they intended to sell in Qeynos for more than they could sell it in Freeport.

I've got a zip disk full of screen shots from my early days. I might have to breakdown and buy a zip drive just to pull those screenshots off it.

Mino Axes were 7plat and came from what might as well have been outer space. "Akanon? Let me consult my cloth map."

How many originals are here? Who remembers the early days when you died and giving someone /consent meant they could loot your body! Talk about having to build up trust!

Glad I wasn't the only one who used the cloth map for navigation.
