Ok, but for some dishes, like your tikka masala, substituting tofu for chicken thighs is more expensive(or, maybe approximately equal depending on location) while being quite close calorically. You don't have to drop all protein, maybe just the fatty ones. And even then, there's way to cook...

All of Esslemont's books have been worth it. Night of Knives was his first book(ever? in this series? don't know) and it really shows. But it gives a lot of important history to the empire, so still worth reading. The rest of his books are a dramatic increase in quality. Erikson's side...
