So... At the Carnival ended up being pretty interesting. It's the same type of puzzles than in the other games (none as maddening as in 3 in Three though) and there is also a meta-puzzle (though it is absolutely trivial), but it does something the other two games do not: use the puzzles to...

    Christmas Game Giveaway

It's games I have so I am just making some recommendations for others: Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons is one of the greatest indie game of the last few years (controller is a must though, but I guess all PC gamers have controllers these days). Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is a psychedelic...

Thanks for the kind words and likes guys. I need the support because that Cliff Johnson fellow packaged several of his games in that neat emulator thingy... so I played through 3 in Three. The game structure is basically the same except just about everything turned sour. All of the fairytale...

Retro Game of the Month December 2017: Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)

I guess someone got punished for not following the story properly! But it is true that in this type of game it's not always clear if some of the key actions have to be performed by the player or if they will take place automatically or in cut scenes. One becomes pretty aware of this type of...

Reading stuff on the internet is very dangerous as it makes you discover and play the strangest games... so I end up playing and beating The Fool's Errand a 1987 adventure/puzzle game for... Macintosh! In all its black and white glory! It's especially notable for its structure: the game is a...

Retro Game of the Month December 2017: Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)

Correct me if I am wrong, but in Final Fantasy, at least from IV onward (so the 16-bit ones), there were save points in dungeons. And in Dragon Quest, if you died, you were sent back to the latest church you went to and lost all (or half?) of the money you were carrying with you (but keeping xp...

Retro Game of the Month December 2017: Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)

That's more or less what I am doing except I don't run from battle. We are the heroes: we fight! :) @Xadion I think the spell names in english are severely hampered by the character limit (also equipment etc). In japanese it's a little better, with many spells having english names that sorta...

Retro Game of the Month December 2017: Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)

Enemy damage is so strange in this game. It feels all your average trash mob has abilities that can 2 or 3 shot your characters. It does not really make the game hard or anything, it just mean you have to heal up after every - single - fight... it's a bit tedious. Let's just say I grinded some...

Making some progress in PS IV. Early on I had the game froze twice, probably because old cartridge + old console = dodgy connection, but had no issue since. Also there is a script of the main quest on GameFAQs, so I can play in japanese and go back to read what I played through to be sure I did...

    Awesome Games Done Quick 2016 - 2019

On the RPG front I am curious to see that 40min Dragon Warrior run with RNG control. I understand how a TAS does it, but what kind of wierd setup is used for a human to perform it live and even be marathon safe?

The Megadrive is dusted and plugged so I played QuackShot (starring Donald Duck!). This is a treasure hunting platformer, with Donald disguised as Indiana Jones (using a gun firing plungers in lieu of a whip). The structure of the game is very neat. There are levels all around the world (only 4...

    Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The silver bullet in Jason Schreier's review is: 'it’s all width, no depth'. The world in this game is pretty appealing but the game part seems like an orgy of useless and confusing systems that only allows for a myriad of numbers to slowly go up. I guess some have that itch that needs to be...

I'll start it sometime this week. I need to unearth my Megadrive and check if it works, but before doing that I need to make room for it. On a side note, there are some Megradrive games that have the Genesis version on the cartridge (QuackShot for instance) and my Megadrive is modded with a...

@moonarchia There is a notion of exploration / trial & error, but the mechanisms are significantly less obscure: you have a choice at the end of each section as to where to go next, it's just that it's not much of a choice the first time around, more of a shot in the dark (better take notes...

NES game of the day was RoboWarrior a very competently executed game but that sadly is of the school of the asshole japanese game design. Game Over man, Game Over. More seriously, the whole Batman soundtrack is crazy. The drum lines! EDIT: There is a whole level in Rygar where this is the music... That might be taking electronic minimalism a bit too far. This sky castle theme, on the other hand... damn.

Beat Faxanadu. This game is rough. The least satisfying thing about the game I would say is that everything reset once you leave a screen.
