I liked this a lot - Chmilenko's other series is pretty good, but I found this book to be much better overall.

Yes. Entertaining story, awful writing ( not as bad as azerite healer, but still pretty bad ). The storyline changes considerably for the better, IMO, during the school tournament arc, not sure where that is chapter wise, but it's quite a different story after that.

Yeah, Unholy is bonkers aoe... until unholy pact and swarming mist/slappy hands wears off. Then their aoe craters. Still pretty good though, just not as good as it looks in low dungeons where packs die inside 12 seconds.
