    690 or 7990 or Titian

What, price isn't an option? And are you talking a single 7990/690/Titan, or CFX/SLI? Hell, does the Titan even do SLI?

Do you have UAC on in any form, Intrinsic? I'd start by turning that off altogether. Some games have launchers, etc. that won't be fixable by the "run as administrator" selection, even for all users.

    Windows 8

Yes, you're somewhat right. Vista uses WDDM 1.0, and Win7 uses WDDM 1.1. While mostly the same, 1.1 brought a number of improvements to the table, especially in the graphics domain, and it took a while for the major players to catch up and release drivers that took advantage of the new features...

    Desktop Computers

Sad, but true. AMD seems to compare the FX 8350 to Ivy Bridge. If it's their top offering, and even the LGA2011 version of Sandy Bridge beats it (even if it's only by a hair), they've fallen further behind than I thought.

This. It's an issue recovering from sleep with USB 3.0 devices. Can't remember the last time I put my desktop to sleep, and I'm probably not alone on this, since sleep mode causes a thousand different problems. If this is why you're worried about Haswell, don't be.

My wife uses an HP Pavillion dv7. It was about the same price but has discrete graphics instead of the Intel 4000. It's alright, nothing great, but at that price, you won't get "great". I'd go for the ASUS, myself.

Combining 2 hard drives into 1 volume

Windows 8 Storage Spaces will also do it, but, as with the traditional software JBOD (Spanned)/RAID 0 (Striped)/RAID 1 (Mirror) setups in Windows, you'll have to format the drives (and any new drives you add to the pool afterwards). FlexRAID (www.flexraid.com) will do it without formatting...

Well, okay, yes. You can create a shortcut to shutdown.exe, but that's been present in every version of Windows since, what, 2000? I wouldn't say that that counts.

    Bitcoins/Litecoins/Virtual Currencies

Refund received. Too speculative for my tastes, especially given the uncertainty of the status of the market once the systems actually ship. If I could have the box tomorrow, I'd be all over it. 6 months is a stretch, and that's not even for sure, so... forget it. At least they didn't argue...

    Bitcoins/Litecoins/Virtual Currencies

Meh. I emailed them and told them the order was placed in error. Hopefully they'll just cancel it since it's still processing. Too much back and forth with this shit, I'm not gonna bother. I won't buy a video card just to mine BTC, and if ordering an inexpensive ASIC makes no sense, then...

    JRPGs of the X360/PS3/Wii Generation

Good god, yes. He was so fucking annoying kuma. Wait. Damnit, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? He's in my head now. P3 killed off Shinjiro (in the original story, anyway), who was only marginally annoying with his moping emo shit. P4 should have done the same to Teddie.

    Bitcoins/Litecoins/Virtual Currencies

Might try that. With what I have right now, I'm only doing an aggregate of ~300 Mh/s, so there's really very little point in this unless I want to invest some money, I guess. Edit: I ordered a Jalapeno. We'll see when it gets here.

    JRPGs of the X360/PS3/Wii Generation

Yeah, I can agree with that. I couldn't stand Persona 3: FES long enough to finish the story. It was the same gameplay minus a few things that made it fun, with an even weaker storyline. No thanks.

    JRPGs of the X360/PS3/Wii Generation

Oh, I don't know, I would disagree with that assessment pretty much entirely. JRPG stories are different than what we might expect because of two major factors: 1. We (mostly non-Japanese gamers) aren't the target audience, and, 2. Some of translation teams really, really suck. Some are...

    Bitcoins/Litecoins/Virtual Currencies

Wow, you're not kidding. Maybe I should invest in an ATI card for now. I can't float the purchase price of an Avalon without my wife disowning me. I'll see how the first BTC works out. I might be able to convince her that I can make back what I'm going to spend on the ASIC box in time.

SSIS Package Data Flow Task works on Win7 laptop but fails on Server 2008 R2

Huh. Really. I wonder which KB actually resolves this. If it happens again, you might want to run SURT before you do the install to see what the offending package might be. Who knows, might show some insight into what's actually broken.

    Bitcoins/Litecoins/Virtual Currencies

I don't dare mine at work. I figure the server at home is on anyway, so I might as well let it run, but yeah, I wonder how much it's costing me to do so... Edit: It's genuinely disappointing how horrible an nVidia Quadro 2000 is at mining. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I'm only getting...

    Bitcoins/Litecoins/Virtual Currencies

I've started mining at home, just to see how long it'll take me to mine 1 BTC. So far, about 0.0075 BTC in ~6h. Seems like it would take forever to accumulate any kind of reasonable amount of currency this way, so there must be another way (or this is just a scale thing).

Question using my TV as a 3rd monitor.......50 feet away

I use HDMI audio with my TV/laptop setup. It didn't need any specific setup to work. Just plug it in and go. I might have had to manually choose the HDMI audio out when I first put in the laptop -- I can't remember, it's been so long -- but when I unplug it/plug it back in these days, it just...

The problem is that you don't have ready access to the data that your provider has about how much data you've used that month. They do, however, and there should be the option for a killswitch once you've hit your limit. Instead, they just text you when you hit the limit, then every once in a...

Unsure. I can't prove it one way or another at this point as this happened two weeks ago. I'll see what they say when I call them (after I'm billed). It's Rogers, so they probably won't lower the payment. It's $200, so I'm not going to go apeshit on them -- I'll just never do business with...

Not sure that's the guns talking. I think that's more an unhealthy lack of knowledge of basic economics and an overdose of "we don't give a fuck". But, hey... at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter.

Because 3 clicks is so much more difficult than the two clicks it was with Windows 7, right? Sometimes, Microsoft gets things wrong. Sometimes, people make a huge fucking deal out of insignificant changes. This, in my mind, is 100% the latter.

Accidentally went over my data plan by 2GB and change last month (phone was in my pocket, on silent, trying to download an app over and over and over all day and I was busy, didn't check). Windows 8

Yep, you're correct, you can't do double parity in Windows 8. You can in Server 2012. You can do a triple mirror in Win8, though, provided you have enough drives to do it. It's a 67% loss of drive space, though, so... ouch. Also, I don't get the 5 disk requirement for a three-way mirror. Why...

Tempted to try now. I'll throw a Win8 VM together later and see if it lets me do double parity on a mirror. If it behaves anything like a dynamic disk mirror, it definitely won't unmount for you. It'll just bitch to the event log until the problem goes away, or the system touches a bad sector...

Stay away. Use iBlacklist if you want...

As far as I know, you can do double parity with SS. I didn't try as the performance was absolutely shitty with a single parity drive.
