Investigate if there is an OEM recall on the car for that known issue. Warranty or not, they would have to fix it. Second choice; keep trying to find a fix that isn't going to cost more than the price of the car. Third choice; you eat the cost and "lesson learned" on buying used without research...

I think you're going to be right, on a lightly modded car which - since this is much more common - has an ECU that adjusts AFR based on some factors like gas quality and altitude.

Adding intakes and headers/downpipe changes the air to fuel ratios and can lean out the motor in a very dangerous way. Products that don't require tunes also don't add any measurable power to speak of, which is why no tune is required to take advantage of said increase in air or exhaust. So, yes...
