You do have all those options in 5E, at level 3 you pick a fighting style which every fighter gets, then you branch from there to champion, eldritch knight etc and each of those comes with new abilities.

Highway man is still good. His bleed is great and base attack that will crit for 50+. I keep him front row for quick strong and accurate melee dmg. Just bring him when blight isn't an option. That said he is no where near as strong as he used to be.

You have to min/max IMO. The expansion stuff will wreck you if you don't at least follow the optimal leveling guide, as in when to switch to what class.

They really worked on synergies past year or so, can build specific deck types or focus on just getting one card rolling for a win using lots of cards that work well together.
