Yes. The new support is 5x3 engraving with full lvl 7 gems and 4 lvl 8 gems. The gems stay after the event, engravings go away once it expires though.

Nobody plays more than 1-3 characters at this stage of the game. Most people who are ready for Akkan are doing so with 1 character. If you look at my above roster, I am in the 0.00001% of the hardcore and even I only have 4 characters that will be ready (albeit 1 is ready for hard mode).

RMT already exists. There were avenues for this and some of us took full advantage before the normal cease orders came from Blizzard. Booze touched on it earlier but the best items are already tradeable.

You can get 1 shot by a fair amount of the mechanics at 65+ as well. There are a lot of ways for every class to barrier / avoid this provided you put the time into the build. That's why it's a fun encounter.
